Fortune unveiled its first-ever Fortune 50 AI Innovators list, a definitive guide to the pioneering companies shaping this technology-driven future. This sector is currently drawing a significant portion of startup investment dollars, accounting for one in every four.
Recent events in AI highlight the importance of staying abreast of its developments, as noted by Lee Clifford, Fortune’s investing and finance editor. Clifford points to the uncertainties surrounding AI’s impact, including its potential to render jobs obsolete and the projected timeline for computers to attain human-level intelligence by 2029.
The inroads of investments into AI are evident, with Microsoft’s findings revealing a $3.50 return for every $1 invested in AI. Crunchbase data indicates that one in every four dollars invested in American startups is directed towards AI ventures, resulting in the creation of 200 AI unicorns this year.

Clifford emphasizes their collective influence in shaping AI’s future and its broader societal impact. Many of these listed companies will participate in the Fortune Brainstorm AI 2023 conference in San Francisco on December 11-12.
This conference, now in its third year, will feature renowned speakers such as Vinod Khosla, Reid Hoffman, Sal Khan, Clara Shih, Matthew Prince, and others, offering insights into AI’s transformative effects across various sectors. Curated by Fortune’s editors, the conference will host discussions among executives, academics, and policymakers, exploring AI’s evolving role in business practices.
