Lansing/ September 12, 2023 (SPN) | Michigan Governor Whitmer has officially designated September 11, as Patriot Day in Michigan.
This solemn occasion serves as a day of remembrance and tribute to the heroes who tragically lost their lives during the September 11 attacks and those who made extraordinary sacrifices to help others, particularly our courageous first responders who exhibited exceptional bravery in their response to the attacks and in aiding the victims.
Following a presidential proclamation, Governor Whitmer has issued a directive for both U.S. and Michigan flags to be flown at half-staff across the state on Sunday, September 11, 2023.
“On Patriot Day, we pay our respects to the Americans who were taken from us, the heroic first responders who rushed to their aid, and the dedicated service members who pursued justice against those responsible,” Governor Whitmer remarked. “The 9/11 attacks resulted in the loss of nearly 3,000 lives and left an indelible mark on our nation. They not only tested our resilience but also reinforced our commitment to our fundamental values, highlighting the strong bond we share as Americans. On this Patriot Day, I encourage all Michiganders to unite in a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m. local time and actively engage in community service or charitable acts. Together, when we stand as one, we can achieve greatness.”
Nearly 3,000 patriots lost their lives that day, and countless others were profoundly affected by this tragedy.
Patriot Day is observed each year on September 11th to commemorate the lives lost in the September 11 attacks. It is a time when individuals are encouraged to take a moment of silence in sync with the attacks, commencing at 8:46 a.m. local time.
The State of Michigan honors and remembers these heroes by lowering flags to half-staff. Michigan residents, businesses, schools, local governments, and other organizations are also encouraged to display flags at half-staff.
To lower flags to half-staff, flags should be initially raised to the peak briefly and then lowered to the half-staff position. This process is reversed before the flag is lowered for the day.
Moreover, as per President Biden’s proclamation, flags are currently flying at half-staff as a mark of respect for the recent passing of Queen Elizabeth II. A notification will be issued specifying the date for flags to be returned to full-staff.
