In a joint effort, the Manipur United Clubs’ Organisation (AMUCO) and Manipur Literary & Cultural Forum Tripura are all set to unveil a newly installed memorial statue of Nupilan at Gouranagar in Khowai district of Tripura on April 30.
The statue aims to honor and celebrate the women’s uprising against the British in 1939, which has been a source of inspiration for Manipuri women living in and outside the state.
The unveiling ceremony of the statue will be accompanied by a cultural program, for which an AMUCO team will leave for Tripura on April 29.
The objective behind installing the statue of Nupilan is to make the Manipuri diaspora feel proud of being a Manipuri among the different communities residing in their area.
The decision to install the memorial statue of Nupilan statue was taken during the Nupilan observance organized by AMUCO and the Tripura forum on December 12, 2002, at Berimura, which has a substantial population of Manipuris in Tripura.
After the resolution to install the Nupilan statue was taken, several charitable Manipuri people donated for the construction of the statue.
Krishnachandra, the AMUCO publicity secretary, urged the state government to take up initiatives for installing statues of Manipur patriots outside the state. This move aims to honor and commemorate the sacrifices and contributions made by Manipur patriots in the history of India.
