Imphal/July 20, 2023 (SPN) | In a shocking incident that has left the State outraged, Manipur Police have launched an investigation into the viral video showing the horrifying parading of two women naked.
The miscreants responsible for this heinous act are being actively pursued by the authorities. The incident, which took place on May 4, 2023, has led to widespread condemnation, including one prominent BJP leader has called for swift justice.
As per a press note signed by Superintendent of Police, K Meghachandra, the police swiftly registered a case against the armed miscreants at the Nongpok Sekmai police station in the Thoubal district.
They are leaving no stone unturned in their efforts to apprehend the culprits behind the abduction, gangrape, and murder of the victims. However, despite a complaint being filed on May 18 and an FIR registered in June, no arrests have been made yet.
Prominent BJP leader RK Imo expressed his disgust and concern after watching the video. He demanded the immediate identification and arrest of the perpetrators, calling for capital punishment as a deterrent against such heinous crimes in the future.
RK Imo Tweeted, “Just saw the video clip of two women being paraded naked, and sexually abused, very disturbing and feel disgusted seeing it. Upon enquiring, I was informed that the incident happened on 4th May, the complaint was made on 18th May and FIR was registered in June, but no accused have been arrested till now. I want Manipur Police to identify these people in the video, arrest them immediately and give capital punishment so that no person dares to repeat this heinous crime again. Let us not spare any of these people involved.”
Former Advisor to the Chief Minister of Manipur, Rajat Sethi also strongly condemned the incident. Rajat tweeted, “Capital punishment is the only answer to the criminals who paraded women in Manipur on 4th May (this is an old incident crime from early days of violence, video evidence has now emerged). Swift identification & arrests should be made and exemplary punishment meted out.”
Some Twitterati also expressed their voice against the parading of two women naked.
Thangboi Vaiphei, the Chief of B. Phainom village, which was affected by the violent incident, shared the harrowing account of the events that unfolded on May 4, 2023. The village, located within the Island Block in Kangpokpi district, was targeted by Meitei mobs, resulting in its complete destruction.
The violence that erupted on May 3, 2023, in Churachandpur quickly spread to other parts of Manipur. Despite requesting protection, they received no assistance. Thangboi Vaiphei and his family were subjected to a horrifying abduction and assault.
The failure of the peace committee and the lack of timely intervention by the authorities led to the devastation of 12 Kuki tribal villages in the Phowaibi area. The affected villagers are now seeking refuge in relief centers at Churachandpur, struggling to come to terms with the loss of their homes and livelihoods.
In response to the escalating tensions, Manipur Police have implemented strict measures to enforce curfew in the region.
As many as 126 checkpoints have been installed in different districts, both in the hills and the valley. The police have detained 452 individuals for violating the curfew.
