60.023 km of Indo-Myanmar border will be fenced – CM Biren

Chief Minister N Biren said that under the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, 60.023 km of fencing will be taken up along the Indo-Myanmar border.

Replying to a question raised by MLA K.Ranjit Singh, leader of the House CM N Biren informed that so far 5.6 km of the Indo-Myanmar border fencing between Border Pillar No 79 and 81 have been completed.

Biren added that regarding the Indo-Myanmar fencing, the Government of India and Myanmar Government will jointly take up the issue. While the border fencing started over the last five years, Biren clarified that fencing work hit hurdles as certain issues cropped up from time to time.

Noting the controversy surrounding the India-Myanmar border dispute, he said it is up to the government of India to resolve any dispute with Myanmar with the state government’s consent.

The Opposition MLA sought reasons behind the sluggish nature of the border fencing work even though work started over the last five years. Ranjit also drew the attention of the House if the border dispute exists between Myanmar and Manipur.

The United Committee Manipur (UCM) and several other civil society organizations in the state have been demanding to halt the ongoing Indo-Myanmar border fencing work claiming the fencing work is being carried out at the expense of Manipur’s territories.

The civil bodies asserted that border fencing work from border pillar number 79 to 102 is carried after losing one to three km of Manipur’s land.

Further, responding to a question raised by MLA Sheikh Noorul Hassan, the Chief Minister said ITI Lilong was established under Skill Labour, Employment & Entrepreneurship Department offering craftsmanship, carpentry, molding & welding courses and other skill development training programmes.

Education Minister Th. Basanta Kumar replying to a question put up by MLA Abdul Nasir said one school is benefitted under IDMI (Infrastructure Development for Minority Institute). He said as per official record, the total area of Lilong Higher Secondary Madrassa is 0.36540 hectare/0.9029 acre. The Minister further said the number of teaching and non-teaching staff of Netaji Subash Chandra Bose Awasiya Vidyalaya, Lilong is 12 and 7 respectively.

Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Minister Y Khemchand said construction of 103 km long Shirui to Khayang Phungtha PMGSY road is in progress but the road stretching from Shirui to Kachouphung village is targeted to be completed by September. The Minister was replying to a question raised by MLA Ram Muivah.
