Babina Observes Breast Cancer Month in Manipur

Imphal/ October 31, 2023 (SPN) | A screening and awareness program on breast cancer was held at Babina Diagnostic in Porompat in Manipur yesterday. The program was organized by the American Oncology Institute (AOI) at Babina Specialty Hospital and Babina Diagnostic in collaboration with the All Manipur Working Journalists’ Union (AMWJU).

Dr. Thangjam Dhabali, Chairman and Managing Director of Babina Group, addressed the event, stating that breast cancer is the most prevalent form of cancer worldwide, with an increasing incidence rate in India. Breast cancer accounts for 12.7 percent of all cancer cases, followed by lung cancer at 12.2 percent. While cervical cancer was prevalent in Manipur several years ago, breast cancer has now become the most common form of cancer.

Dr. Dhabali said that Cancer incidence among women in Manipur surpasses that among men, with approximately 103 cases for every one lakh female population compared to 74 cases for every one lakh male population.

The program, themed “Thrive 365,” was conducted as a part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

In the North East region, the incidence of cancer among men is highest in Mizoram, with 274 persons diagnosed with cancer for every one lakh population. Among women, Arunachal Pradesh records the highest incidence of cancer, with 170 cases for every one lakh population. When compared to other North East states, Manipur has a lower incidence rate of cancer.

In Manipur, lung cancer is more common among men, while breast cancer is the most common among women. Dr. Dhabali emphasized the importance of adapting to a healthy lifestyle and early detection for the prevention and cure of these diseases.

Bijoy Kakchingtabam, President of AMWJU, stressed the need for generating awareness about breast cancer and the significance of early detection for successful treatment. He encouraged journalists to write about breast cancer to raise awareness among the public.

Dr. Neha Thangjam, an Internal Medicine specialist at AOI, and Dr. Dhanabir Thangjam, a Surgical Oncology specialist, explained that Breast Cancer Awareness Month, often referred to as the “Pink Month,” is observed with the aim of raising awareness about breast cancer, promoting early detection, and providing support to those affected by the disease.

Dr. Dhanabir Thangjam also discussed the significance of observing Breast Cancer Awareness Month year-round due to the high number of breast cancer cases and deaths in South East Asia, often attributed to a lack of awareness. They pointed out that breast cancer is most common in Manipur.

The program was also attended by AOI Facility Director Manas Majumder and Marketing Head Gopen Tongbram.
