Northeast Journalist Chandrani Sinha has won the International Climate Change Award for the year 2022. She is an independent multimedia journalist from Assam and she is the only Indian journalist to receive this award.
Sinha who covers reports on climatic change and the environment said, ‘Climate change is an emergency situation in our nation, we have just started talking about it but the work we still have to do on it is huge.’
The award was given for the video documentary she had made which is entitled ‘The Laments of Brahmaputra’. This is a story she made for the third time in association with Zobaidur Rahman from Bangladesh.
Award winners will be featured in a one-hour special program hosted by Al Roker, co-host of NBC News’ today and Savannah sellers which will be hosted by NBC.
On being asked how the idea came to her, Sinha replied that people residing near the banks of the Brahmaputra river are all suffering because of the recent flood and the disaster that occurred very frequently in the area. The disaster has caused intense suffering to the people and herself.
Chandrani Sinha has been contributing to both national and international media like Vice, Climate Home, The Third Pole, and Atlas Obscura amongst others.
For the second year in a row, the global media collaboration Covering Climate Now honored journalists for their contributions and sacrifice.
Winners of the Covering Climate Now Journalism Awards, 2022 included journalists at the Guardian, Agence-France Presse, Al Jazeera, PBS NewsHour, Globo, HBO Max, The Third Pole, Grist, The Post and Courier, The Los Angeles Times and WGBH- PRX. Justin Worland, senior correspondent for TIME was named Climate Journalist of the Year.
