CM Biren extends aid to survivors of Tupul Railway Camp tragedy

CM visits Army Hospital at IGAR South Mantripukhri to meet survivors of Tupul Railway camp tragedy

CM N Biren visits Army Hospital at IGAR South, Mantripukhri on Sunday and met the persons who are undergoing medical treatment after being injured by the recent landslide tragedy at Tupul Railway Camp, Noney.

As assured, CM also handed over a sum of Rs. 50,000 each to the injured persons namely Havildar Marjision Singh, Havildar Nima Onchu Sherpa, Lance Naik Hirdya Lamang, Riflemen Siddanth Chhetri, Riflemen Sarangthem Shyamchandra Singh, Riflemen Prokash Newar and Chef Kinkar Parua.

As many as eight personnel of the 107 Territorial Army (TA) who were rescued from the landslide site who were posted at the Tupul Railway camp so far sustained injuries, apart from five civilians as of Saturday.

Meanwhile, the joint rescue operation of the Army, Manipur Police, SDRF, NDRF, helped by volunteers continued on Sunday in search of the missing persons in the landslide that hit the NF Railway worksite and the Indian Army company location at Tupul, Noney district in Manipur on the intervening night of June 29-30.

So far, 18 people have been rescued and a total of 35 bodies have been recovered from the landslide till Sunday 12 noon, while 27 others are reportedly still missing.

According to official sources, the deceased were identified as Gopal Phukan, 37, from Morigaon, Assam (VSC ); havildar Milan Tamang (107 TA); naik Tshering Lepcha (107 TA); naik Diwankar Thapa (107-TA); rifleman Sankar Chhetri (107-TA); rifleman Benjamin Rai (107-TA); rifleman Md Jairuk Hoque (107-TA); rifleman Marcus Gurung (107-TA); naib subedar Sitaram Rai, Darjeeling West Bengal; lance naik Bishal Chhetri Darjeeling West Bengal;

Two identities of two other bodies were yet to be ascertained, the sources said.

While the rescue operation was underway at Tupul landslide site, another landslide reportedly occurred at Sibilong village under Tousem sub-division in Tamenglong district early Sunday. Several travellers and vehicles were stranded on the Imphal-Jiribam road along National Highway-37 as the landslide brought down several huge boulders that blocked the road, sources said.

Minister for Health and IPR Dr. Sapam Ranjan, Chief Secretary Dr. Rajesh Kumar, DGP Shri P. Doungel and other officials accompanied CM Biren during the visit.
