CM Biren warns the agitating students

CM N Biren shocked over the thrashing of commuters by agitating students on Airport Road.

Taking serious note of the thrashing of a commuter by a group of agitating students of Imphal College on the Airport road, Chief Minister N Biren said that he had also seen the video footage of the incident which utterly shocked him.

Chief Minister N Biren made it clear that stern action will be initiated against those organizations found involved in criminal activities. He also disclosed that the State Government closely monitoring certain organisations mainly the nexus of student org with Underground (UG) or outlawed militant groups and involved in anti-national activities.

CM Biren who attended the Gandhi Memorial Hall to attend National Cleanliness Day on Sunday strongly denounced the recent instances of attacking the Manipur University Registrar’s office by a group of students and the blocking of Airport road where a commuter was physically thrashed by agitating students protesting against deferment of college elections.

The Chief Minister said that such deteriorating morale and discipline on the part of the students is very unfortunate.

He reiterated that the current government will not tolerate whatever any individual does as he likes. We have come out to maintain a positive system in society. Any student found involved in criminal activities and anti-national activities will be identified and recorded in each and every police station.

When the government does so, the service career of the students will land in trouble. Parents should convince their children to stay aloof from such criminal activities, the Chief Minister cautioned.

Our society is heading into a horrible situation that needs to be retrospected. Action will be taken against those students who thrashed the man and the leaders who ignited the stir will be identified and necessary action will be initiated, he said.

The Chief Minister conveyed that the students’ union election was deferred following controversies like snatching of nomination papers among the students and threats using the name of outlawed organisations in some areas. To prevent unwanted incidents, the government deferred the election, Biren added.

Similar incidents of agitating students were seen in Thoubal College, YK College Wangjing, and Kha Manipur College, Kakching staged denouncing the notification issued by Dr Rangitbali Waikhom, Director, Directorate of University and Higher Education on Wednesday which indefinitely postponed all college elections.

At Thoubal College, the students locked the college gate around noon and shouted various slogans to show their dissent. Students of YK College commenced their protest at around 1 pm in front of the college gate. The students also set fire to several desks and benches among other items during the protest. Students of Kha Manipur College Kakching also locked up the administrative block as well as the college gate in protest.

Moreover, the Students of Manipur University on Friday erupted in protest, decrying the show-cause notice served to Dr. Naorem Sanatomba, an assistant professor of the Manipuri department of the university for reportedly criticising the state government in his speech.

A large number of agitating students stormed the administrative block and office of the registrar of the university, demanding to revoke the show cause notice. The agitating students also resorted to vandalising university properties.

With regards to the MU protest, the six student bodies namely AMSU, MSF, DESAM, KSA, SUK, and AIMS have expressed strong condemnations over the show cause notice served to the assistant professor.
