General Motors (GM) has recently introduced the all-new 2024 Chevrolet Traverse midsize SUV, showcasing its redesigned features, improved safety options, and powerful new engine.
The reveal took place at the Lansing Delta Township Assembly plant, where the vehicle is manufactured, on Monday, July 17, 2023.
Scott Bell, Vice President of Chevrolet expressed his excitement about the updated Traverse, stating, “Our new Traverse is designed and engineered to act and look more like an SUV.
Led by the all-new Z71, the 2024 Traverse builds on the success of its predecessor and will undoubtedly enable us to be in more customer driveways.”
GM executives believe that the revamped 2024 Chevrolet Traverse will give the brand a competitive edge in the midsize SUV market. The inclusion of a new off-road capable Z71 model is expected to attract new customers and solidify Chevrolet’s position in the segment.
The Traverse’s success will also pave the way for its sibling models, such as the GMC Acadia, Buick Enclave, and Cadillac XT6.
Recently, Midsize SUVs have become the “Goldilocks” of the car industry, capturing a significant market share in the United States. Ivan Drury, the director of Insights at Edmunds, highlighted their appeal, stating, “Midsize SUVs (are) the Goldilocks of the industry, not too big, not too small, not too cheap, not too expensive.” They offer a desirable balance between size, affordability, and features.
Ivan Drury further said midsize SUVs represent the second-largest-selling segment in the U.S. market, following small SUVs. Looking at the Sales data, compact SUVs accounted for 18.3 percent of new cars sold, while midsize SUVs made up 17.7 percent. Large trucks followed closely behind at 10.5 percent.
The 2024 Chevrolet Traverse boasts several notable enhancements that cater to customer preferences and safety requirements.
The redesigned Traverse will offer four trim levels: LS, LT, Z71, and RS. All trims will include enhanced safety features and advanced technologies.
The standard Chevy Safety Assist will encompass automatic emergency braking, forward collision alert, lane keep assist with lane departure warning, front pedestrian and bicyclist braking, IntelliBeam high beam assist, and a following distance indicator.
Equipped with a new 2.5L turbocharged engine, the 2024 Chevrolet Traverse delivers an estimated 315 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque, representing a 19 percent increase in torque compared to the previous model.
The SUV also boasts a maximum trailering rating of up to 5,000 pounds. An eight-speed automatic transmission is paired with the engine, and all-wheel drive, including an off-road-capable twin-clutch AWD system exclusive to the Z71 trim, is available.
The Traverse Z71 model stands out with its off-road capabilities. It offers more than 1 inch of additional ground clearance and increased track width, providing enhanced stability and handling.
The Z71 variant comes standard with all-terrain tires and exclusive 18-inch wheels. It features blackout accents on the grille, roof rails, and moldings, adding to its sporty and rugged aesthetic.
The 2024 Chevrolet Traverse exhibits a bold and athletic exterior design, incorporating elements inspired by both crossovers and trucks. Its wider wheel placement contributes to a more robust appearance.
Phil Zak, the executive design director for Global Chevrolet, commented on the vehicle’s exterior, stating, “The bold exterior of the all-new Traverse helps redefine its role and capability for customers.
Each trim level of the new Traverse showcases unique styling accents. The LS and LT trims offer the Midnight/Sport Edition, while the RS trim features an exclusive walk-up lighting animation that greets owners as they approach the vehicle with an enabled key.
The RS variant also boasts premium features such as 22-inch high-gloss black aluminum wheels and sportier suspension tuning.
The 2024 Traverse introduces two all-new exterior colors: Lakeshore Blue and Harvest Bronze. The front and rear lighting systems, including standard LEDs, have been redesigned to enhance visibility and aesthetics.
Additionally, the Traverse offers an available AutoSense Liftgate, a first for the model, and an optional panoramic dual-glass sunroof.
The interior of the 2024 Chevrolet Traverse prioritizes technology and passenger comfort. The standard infotainment display screen on the instrument panel measures 17.7 inches diagonally, a 75% increase from the previous model.
Wireless phone charging and a Wi-Fi hotspot are available, while six USB ports come standard. The new Traverse also features an 11-inch-diagonal configurable driver information center, providing ample information for drivers.
The seating configurations vary across trim levels, accommodating either eight or seven passengers. The LS trim offers eight-passenger seating, while the LT, Z71, and RS trims come with standard seven-passenger seating.
The LT trim does provide an option for eight-passenger seating. SmartSlide technology allows easy access to the third row, even with a child seat installed. Additionally, the RS trim includes one-touch folding second-row seats and power-folding third-row seats as standard.
As GM pushes forward with its goal of transitioning to all-electric vehicles by 2035, the gasoline-powered Traverse remains a crucial component of the company’s lineup.
Ivan Drury of Edmunds highlighted the significance of vehicles like the Traverse, stating, “A solid seller, competing in one of the most competitive segments within the industry. Loyalty is built with vehicles like Traverse that allow levels of all-round box checking.”
With its redesigned features, enhanced safety options, and powerful engine, the 2024 Chevrolet Traverse aims to dominate the midsize SUV market. Its success will solidify GM’s position and pave the way for future advancements in the automotive industry.
The Traverse is set to go on sale early next year, with pricing details to be announced closer to the launch date.
