Grab the SHAKTI Scholars Fellowship Worth Rs 1,00,000

In a significant step towards fostering evidence-based policymaking for women’s empowerment, the National Commission for Women (NCW) has unveiled SHAKTI Scholars: NCW’s Young Research Fellowship programme, with Rs 1 lakh.

This initiative aims to engage young minds in conducting multidisciplinary, policy-oriented research on critical challenges facing women in India today. The fellowship, named ‘SHAKTI’ – symbolizing strength and empowerment – invites applications from passionate students and researchers eager to contribute to gender equality through rigorous academic inquiry.

By supporting fresh perspectives, the NCW hopes to generate actionable insights that can influence laws, policies, and societal attitudes. The programme focuses on a broad spectrum of themes, including:

  • Women’s safety and dignity
  • Gender-based violence
  • Legal rights and access to justice
  • Cyber safety for women
  • Implementation of the Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH) framework at workplaces
  • Women’s leadership and political participation
  • Health and nutrition
  • Education and skill development
  • Economic empowerment and labour force participation
  • Socio-cultural practices affecting women
  • Work-life balance in modern India

These areas reflect the NCW’s ongoing priorities, building on recent efforts such as the launch of a 24×7 helpline (short-code 14490) last month to provide immediate support to women in distress.

Eligible candidates must be Indian citizens aged 21 to 30 years, with at least a graduation degree from a recognized institution. Preference will be given to those pursuing or holding post-graduation qualifications or higher degrees in research-related fields. Independent researchers with proven capabilities are also encouraged to apply, making the programme inclusive for talented individuals beyond traditional academic paths.

Selected fellows will receive a grant of ₹1 lakh to support a six-month dedicated research study. Importantly, the funds will be disbursed in phases, tied to milestones and progress reports, ensuring accountability and quality output.

The selection process is rigorous: Applications will be evaluated by an Expert Committee formed by the NCW. Shortlisted candidates will be called for an online interaction to assess their proposals and suitability.

Interested applicants have a tight window – submissions must be sent via email to the NCW by December 31, 2025, up to 5:30 p.m. Detailed guidelines and application formats are available on the official NCW website (ncw.nic.in).

This fellowship comes at a crucial time when India continues to grapple with persistent gender disparities, from workplace harassment to digital threats and economic inequalities. By nurturing young researchers, the NCW is investing in a future where data-driven solutions can accelerate progress towards true gender justice.

As the deadline approaches, aspiring scholars are urged to seize this opportunity to lend their voice – and research – to the cause of women’s empowerment. For more details, visit the NCW portal or contact the Commission directly.
