Heavy Rainfall Expects in Northeast India

Imphal/October 04, 2023 (SPN) | The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted that Northeast India can expect heavy to very heavy rainfall for the next four days.

According to the daily weather bulletin from IMD, there will be widespread rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning with occasional heavy rain in Assam and Meghalaya from October 4 to 7, in Arunachal Pradesh from October 4 to 6, and in Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura from October 4 to 5.

This year, out of the eight Northeastern states, three – Assam, Manipur, and Mizoram – have received less rainfall than usual during this year’s monsoon season. IMD data shows that Manipur had 46 percent less rainfall, Mizoram had 28 percent less, and Assam had 20 percent less rain since June.

This significant deficiency in monsoon rainfall, combined with prolonged ethnic violence lasting five months, has had a severe impact on agriculture in Manipur.

On the other hand, the remaining five Northeast states – Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Sikkim, and Tripura – have experienced normal rainfall. According to IMD data, the Northeast region as a whole has received 82 percent of its usual rainfall during this year’s monsoon period.

Among these states, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Meghalaya, and Tripura have had rainfall deficits ranging from 12 to 16 percent, while Sikkim has seen 5 percent more rain than usual since June. According to IMD standards, rainfall within the range of 19 percent deficient to 19 percent excess is considered normal.
