Investigation Reveals Bidya Tortured by Husband’s Family

Imphal (SPN) | An investigation into the death of a 29-year-old woman named RK Ningol Laishram ongbi Bidya alias Devia has revealed that she took her own life due to long physical and mental torture inflicted on her by her in-laws and her husband.

The Investigating Officer of the case made this statement in court today. The incident occurred on April 22, and since then, six members of Bidya’s family have been arrested and taken into police custody for further investigation.

Bidya’s husband and three others have been remanded to five more days of police custody. The father-in-law and the mother-in-law have been remanded to judicial custody till May 13.

All of the accused persons were brought to court under tight security measures, and a large number of police personnel were deployed to prevent any unwanted incidents.

The case began after Bidya’s elder sister filed a complaint with the Imphal police station, stating that Bidya had been found hanging inside a room of their house on April 22 morning.

The complaint mentioned that the previous day, Bidya had made a video call to her sister crying and told her that she was physically assaulted by her husband, her sister-in-law, and her niece. During the video call, Bidya showed her finger bleeding.

The IO’s submission in court mentioned that Rocky, Bidya’s husband, claimed that they were not compatible and that she used to beat him because of her erratic nature. He also said that Bidya did not take care of his mother.

Rocky claimed that they had a love marriage in February 2021 but were hardly compatible and that his wife had a very erratic nature of screaming and shouting loudly.

Rocky claimed that on April 21, his sister Sarita informed him that she along with Bhumika had a heated argument and a fight with his wife. When he came back, he found his wife at the residence of his “Nenemacha” and found that his wife had an injury on the right side of her head.

In the meantime, his elder sister Omita rushed towards his wife and slapped her on the face saying “Nangna Tourise Karino” and also spat on his wife’s face.

Rocky stated he did not intervene, but brought his wife to RIMS hospital for treatment. On April 22, the next day, Rocky claimed due to the impact of the incident the previous night his wife was not happy and she woke up at around 7.30 am.

As he searched for his wife, she was found hanging from the ceiling fan inside a room next to the room of his niece Bhumika on the first floor.

During interrogation, the father-in-law claimed that his daughter-in-law frequently stayed at her parental home without informing them and her husband.

He claimed they used to quarrel with each other on petty matters, and whenever they quarrel, Bidya used to run out of the house screaming and shouting. Her husband assaulted her black and blue, but due to their old age, he and his wife were not able to intervene.
