Imphal/October 07, 2023 (SPN) | In response to the ongoing law and order concerns stemming from the Tribal Solidarity March organized by the All Tribal Students Union Manipur (ATSUM) on May 3, the Manipur State Government has taken a proactive stance to address potential sources of tension. Notably, the State government has issued a series of stringent actions aimed at preventing the unauthorized renaming of districts, sub-divisions, places, institutions, and addresses without obtaining prior approval.
On October 5, 2023, the Home Department of the Government of Manipur issued an order under the authority of the Governor of Manipur. This order, bearing reference number H-1701/238/2023-HD-HD, was issued by Dr. Vineet Joshi, the Chief Secretary of Manipur.
This decision by the government comes in light of reports from credible sources, which have indicated that various Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), institutions, establishments, and individuals have been engaged in renaming or attempting to rename such entities.
These unauthorized renaming endeavors have been conducted in a manner deemed objectionable and likely to incite controversy and conflict among the communities residing in the state.
The State Government of Manipur has expressed deep concern about these activities, particularly in view of the sensitive and volatile nature of the ongoing law and order crisis. There are apprehensions that such renaming practices could contribute to mistrust amongst communities and potentially exacerbate the current situation, further dividing the state’s residents.
To ensure the effective implementation of these orders, all Central and State Government Authorities, as well as the Management Authorities of Institutions, Establishments, and Autonomous Bodies, are strongly advised to thoroughly review the names and addresses of their respective offices and establishments.
This review should encompass all signage, official communications, websites, and all documents related to the services they provide. Individuals found in violation of these orders will face prosecution under the prevailing laws of the land.
In order to enforce these directives efficiently, all District Magistrates and Superintendents of Police in the state have been instructed to take the necessary actions and measures.
