Manipur People’s Party to contest in local body elections

MPP to contest local body election in Manipur

The oldest regional party of the State, Manipur People’s Party (MPP) is ready to contest in local body elections. The party’s interim President Chingakham Shamjai has declared that the lone regional party of the State has decided to contest in the upcoming local body election which is likely to be held in the month of September and October as the party geared up to strengthen its position in the State.

Addressing a press conference held at its Pologround office on Sunday, Chingakham Shamjai admitted that the MPP has been facing an internal crisis for a long time and the party could not function properly. However, at present party workers have started taking up various progressive works under the leadership of the new party leaders in order to revive the party and make it stronger. As such, the party has decided to contest in the upcoming local body election and take part in the governance of the State, he said.

He strongly denounced the statement made by some former MPP members led by former Vice-President Yumnam Bhim at a press conference held at Manipur Press Club on June 1 with regard to the election held for the appointment of MPP Interim President on April 16.

It may be mentioned that the former MPP VP Y Bhim was expelled for six years from the regional party during the term of Late Interim President O Jugindro Singh. It has clearly shown that Bhim has no relation with the party anymore, he said.

Chingakham Shamjai said that the MPP election held on April 16 was conducted in the presence of former party members and leaders. It is very unfortunate that Y. Bhim said that the Interim President election should be declared invalid, he added.

He said that debates should be conducted on various major issues of the State instead of such silly matters, therefore there is no need for discussion and arguing on it. He said that such silly matters only created confusion and misled the people of the State.

Saying that the term of Interim President is temporary and not for a lifetime, Shamjai assured that he will do his best to elect and appoint a regular MPP President before the expiry of his term.

He said that the election for the MPP Interim President was conducted in a free and fair manner in the presence of CEO, Manipur, and the RO elected by the party. The MPP felt ashamed of former MPP VP Bhim for filing a contempt case at the High Court of Manipur against the election of the Interim President, he said
