The Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) Legal Department has submitted a memorandum to the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) seeking the removal of over 1.3 lakh ‘photo-similar’ entries from the State’s photo electoral roll.
The MPCC Legal Department led by its chairman S Shyamcharan Singh, submitted the memorandum at the CEO’s Lamphelpat office.
According to Shyamcharan, there are 1,33,556 excess voters enlisted in the State’s photo electoral roll against similar photographs.
The memorandum requested the CEO to remove the excess or bogus voters under rule number 26 of the Registration of Electors Rules, 1960, and ensure free and fair elections in the future.
The excess voters were found in various Assembly segments of different districts in Manipur, with Imphal East district having the highest number of photo-similar entries.
In Imphal East district, there are 6149 such people in 10 Assembly segments. In Imphal West district, there are 5803 people in 13 Assembly segments.
In Bishnupur district, there are 2643 people in six Assembly segments.
In Thoubal district, there are 5053 people in 10 Assembly segments.
Jiribam AC has 276 such people.
In Chandel district, there are 14,432 such people in two Assembly segments.
In Ukhrul district, there are 2676 people in Phungyar AC, 4894 in Ukhrul AC, and 4461 in Chingai AC.
In Kangpokpi district, there are 8222 people in three Assembly segments.
In Senapati district, there are 40,951 people in three Assembly segments.
In Tamenglong district, there are 14,034 such people in three Assembly segments.
In Churachandpur district, there are 24,159 people in six Assembly segments.
The CEO reportedly told the MPCC Legal Department that 55,000/56,000 fraudulent voters have been removed from the electoral roll so far.
