Texas/ September 17, 2023 (SPN) | Over $1.2 million worth of Fentanyl was seized during a routine traffic stop on I-10 in Guadalupe County.
This operation resulted in the arrest of Ruben Martinez, a resident of Eagle Pass, Texas, and revealed the disturbing presence of this deadly synthetic opioid on our streets.
The event occurred on a Friday morning at approximately 11:45 a.m. A sergeant with the Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office initiated the traffic stop, pulling over a Ford F150 pickup truck.
Taking swift action, the sergeant decided to call in his trusted K-9 partner to conduct a sweep of the vehicle. This decision would prove to be pivotal in uncovering the hidden cache of dangerous narcotics.
As the K-9 partner carefully examined the truck, it was a compartment within the roof of the camper shell over the bed of the pickup that raised suspicion.
Inside that concealed compartment, law enforcement officers made a shocking discovery. A total of 11.4 kilograms, equivalent to just over 25 pounds, of Fentanyl pills were recovered.
In addition, authorities found 38.85 kilograms, or a little over 85 pounds, of suspected Fentanyl powder. The total estimated street value of these drugs amounted to an astonishing $1,256,250.
Ruben Martinez, a 20-year-old individual from Eagle Pass, was promptly taken into custody on charges of drug trafficking. Given the severity of the charges and the significant quantities of Fentanyl involved, Martinez was later handed over to the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) for federal prosecution.
The apprehension of Ruben Martinez and the confiscation of this vast quantity of Fentanyl represent a significant victory in the ongoing battle against drug trafficking and the opioid epidemic.
Fentanyl, an incredibly potent synthetic opioid, has been responsible for a concerning rise in overdose deaths across the United States.

Fentanyl is estimated to be up to 50 times more potent than heroin, making even small amounts of this substance extremely dangerous. Its potency increases the risk of accidental overdose, and the consequences can be fatal.
