Manipur Rajya Sabha MP and Titular King Maharaja Leishemba Sanajaoba said that Shumang Leela (Kumhei) is the pride of Manipur and the art form has won international praise.
He was speaking as the Chief Guest at the inaugural performance of ‘Sangai Shumang Leela International Festival 2022’ organized by Manipur State Shumang Leela Council for eight days at Shumang Leela Shanglen, Palace Compound on Tuesday as part of the 11th Manipur Sangai Festival. The Shumang Kumhei will continue till November 29th.
On the first day of the festival, “Wakhal Ironba” by Sanaleibak Nachom Artists Association was performed. A souvenir was also released by the presidium members during the inaugural function of Shumang kumhei.
MP Leishemba Sanajaoba said that Shumang Leela (Kumhei) with his intrinsic artistic values has made the state proud and all the credit goes to the elders who have played an important role in preserving the art form. He said that this year’s Manipur Sangai Festival is completely different from previous editions. Leishemba Sanajaoba said that under the leadership of Chief Minister N Biren, the 2022 edition of Manipur Sangai Festival is being held under the theme “Festival of Oneness” in 13 different venues with the aim of showcasing the state’s rich cultural heritage under one roof.

Leishemba Sanajaoba further said that the festival provides an opportunity to showcase the rich art and culture of the state which has different traditions, customs and cultures of the different communities settling the state. The Manipur Sangai Festival also reminds that although the state has 34 different tribes, all the people stick together and live in harmony, he added. Maharaja Leishemba noted that three sectors – art and culture, games and sports and tourism – could generate more development in the state and, therefore, emphasis should be given to these sectors.
He said he interacted with Bangladeshi delegates and discussed at length the apparent need to preserve the Manipuri tradition in the neighboring country. The inaugural function was attended by Prof P Gunindro, Vice Chancellor of Manipur University as President, L Tombishak Singh, Chairman of Manipur State Cooperative Union and M Purnimashi Leima, President of Manipur State Shumang Leela Council as Guests of Honor.
