Stipend for learning local languages in Manipur

In what could be termed as a major step to encourage interaction among the people and help in building unity between the hill and valley in the State, the State Government has introduced a three month course to study the dialects and learning local languages of different ethnic communities of the state.

On Tuesday, Directorate of Language Planning and Implementation, Government of Manipur has invited applications from the intending candidates to undergo Local Language Training Programme of seven languages – Anal, Paite, Rongmei, Paomei, Tangkhul, Thadou and Meeteilon for a period of two months.

The development came after Chief Minister N Biren recently proposed a three month training course on learning local languages during the 31st Manipuri Language day celebration at Maharaja Chandrakirti auditorium, Palace Compound on August 30 this year.  

According to a notification issued by Director of Language Planning and Implementation L Nandakumar Singh, financial assistance of Rs. 5000 will be provided to each learner/trainee, subject to change from time to time.

It further stated that the applicants should not have any formal degree, native proficiency or informal knowledge in the language applied for and the minimum educational qualification is 12th passed. In-service applicants must submit their application through proper channels duly certified and forwarded by competent concerned authority.

Preference will be given to learners who have a long term interest in language and language development activities. Learners/trainees must also submit an Undertaking that if he/she leaves in the middle of the training, the total amount of incentive/stipend received may be recovered from him/her. Learners/trainees are expected to secure the minimum pass marks in the assignments and examinations, it conveyed.

Age limit for the learners/trainees shall be below 50 years as on 1/10/2022. Mode of selection, date, time and venue will be notified separately in the Departments Website www.dlpi.mn.gov.in, the notification said.

It informed that the duly filled in application form along with relevant documents duly attested/self attested should be submitted at the Office of Directorate of Language Planning and implementation, Manipur, Sega Road Takhellambam Leikai, Imphal West on or before 15th November, 2022. The application format and prospectus are uploaded in the Directorate’s Official Website  for general information and downloading of application forms, it added.
