Imphal, 21 June: Voices of Youth – Volume II, the fifth book of Yai Publication, was formally launched today at Meitei Leikol, Langjing, in the presence of writers, academics, student leaders, public figures and literary enthusiasts.
The programme was presided over by Dr. Naorem Thoinu, Founder of Yai Publications, while Dr. Reena Nongmaithem, Field Publicity Officer, Central Bureau of Communication, attended as the Chief Guest.
Julie Oinam gave the welcome address. The book was edited by Mesak Takhelmayum and Moirangthem Khaba.
The book was introduced by Dr. Jayalakshmi Phurailatpam, Associate Professor, Department of English and Cultural Studies, Manipur University. Bruce Pebam, President of AMSU Headquarters, and Romesh Oinam, President of DESAM Headquarters, attended the programme as Guests of Honour.
The special guests and key speakers included Dr. Indramani Keithellakpam, Dean, School of Social Sciences, Dhanamanjuri University; Dr. Bhabananda Takhellambam, Principal of MB College; Athouba Khuraijam, former convenor of COCOMI; Naorem Mohen, journalist with India Today NE; and Bobo Naorem, Secretary of DMCC.
Addressing the gathering as Chief Guest, Dr. Reena Nongmaithem spoke on gender roles in contemporary Manipuri society. She reflected on the changing responsibilities and expectations within society and placed the discussion in the broader context of youth, creativity and public awareness.
Dr. Indramani Keithellakpam encouraged budding writers to continue writing with commitment and discipline. He said obstacles should not discourage young writers, as consistent effort would eventually bring meaningful results.
Dr. Bhabananda Takhellambam said young voices need to be guided towards a positive outlook of society. He observed that literature should help young people think seriously about their social environment and contribute constructively through writing.
Naorem Mohen said literature must act as a repository of public memory. He stated that books should document the situation of society and help counter false narratives through thoughtful and responsible writing.
Athouba Khuraijam spoke on the importance of youth voices for the present generation. He also shared his views on the role of book clubs in encouraging writers, readers and intellectual engagement.
Speaking as Guest of Honour, Bruce Pebam discussed the impact of artificial intelligence on creative writing. He also stressed the need for writers to write about society, observing that literature reflects the image and condition of the society from which it emerges.
Romesh Oinam, also addressing the programme as Guest of Honour, encouraged young writers and expressed hope that the publication would continue to groom emerging talents in their literary journey.
Several writers also shared their writing experiences during the programme, giving the audience an insight into their personal journeys, creative motivations and challenges.
In her presidential speech, Dr. Naorem Thoinu said Yai Publication would continue to bring out more works centred on youth voices. She expressed the publishing house’s commitment to grooming talented young writers and providing them with a platform for expression.
Moirangthem Khaba gave the vote of thanks of the book launch event.
The publication showcases the creativity and perspectives of young writers. It seeks to provide a platform for emerging literary voices and encourage greater youth participation in literature, reflection and public discourse.
