On the evening of July 30, I attended Xpeng’s AI intelligent driving technology conference. The main highlight was the launch of Xpeng’s AI Dimensity XOS 5.2.0, which will be rolled out to Chinese users starting that same evening and to users in another 10 countries, including Germany, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, the Netherlands, and France, on August 15. This update boasts 72 new functions and 412 optimized features, encompassing everything from intelligent driving enhancements to improvements in the intelligent cockpit, such as better interconnection with Apple phones.
Xpeng Updated Features
One of the most noteworthy aspects is the changes to XNGP. During the conference, He Xiaopeng explained that Xpeng’s large end-to-end model has significantly accelerated the progress of their intelligent driving technology. Xpeng has invested 3.5 billion yuan (483 million USD) in AI training, including computing power and labor. According to He, this investment has enabled Xpeng to accelerate its intelligent driving program, with a new version iteration every two days, an experience upgrade every two weeks, five full updates in 70 days, and 35 iterations in total.
The upgrade to XNGP isn’t solely based on AI; it also includes 7.56 million kilometers of real vehicle testing and coverage of 2,595 cities across China. Unlike many systems that use a whitelist approach, XNGP operates on a blacklist system, meaning all roads are navigable unless they are blacklisted for specific reasons, such as being in a sensitive area.
With this upgrade, XNGP will be available nationwide, simplifying its use across the country. New features include a 100-meter tracking reverse for situations where the car needs to back out of a blocked section, and a 2.0 Parking function that allows the driver to exit the car while it parks itself.
XNGP now functions without high-precision maps, making it usable nationwide. It also reduces the frequency of heavy braking and false speed reductions, optimizing route selection, detours, and obstacle avoidance. This system addresses common issues in cities with two-wheeled vehicles and pedestrians by performing overtaking maneuvers with the help of the opposite lane in certain scenarios. This improvement means the car won’t come to a halt and demand driver intervention. Additionally, roundabout capabilities have been enhanced, allowing the system to handle driving in and out of roundabouts, lane switching within them, and responding to traffic lights within roundabouts.
He Xiaopeng emphasized that Xpeng car buyers are not guinea pigs, asserting that the system is safe and well-tested. He also mentioned an additional OTA update before the end of the year, which will further enhance XNGP’s capabilities, such as passing through ETC turnstiles automatically and navigating internal roads in places like university campuses. XNGP is available on the Max models of the G6, G9, P7i, and X9 cars.
Intelligent Cockpit of Xpeng
The AI Dimensity XOS 5.2.0 update allows Siri to control various elements of the Xpeng car, such as sentry mode and fast cooling, and integrates the Apple ecosystem more seamlessly. For example, when listening to a song on your mobile phone, the vehicle will automatically recognize it and continue playing it once you enter the car.
The update also introduces various personalization options for displaying information. Xpeng claims 80 new gauges are available with the vehicle’s OTA. There’s also a new immersive map with two modes: navigation and cruising.
Driving modes can be personalized to a greater extent, allowing you to adjust the feel of the steering, energy recuperation, brake pedal, and suspension settings to suit your individual preferences.
The Xpeng AI Dimensity system 5.2.0 will initially be pushed to the X9, G6, G9, and P7i models, with later updates for the P5, G3, and G3i models.
Other Announcements
He Xiaopeng also made several other announcements during the event. The Mona M03 will start arriving in Xpeng stores on August 1, with the price being announced later in August at the launch event. Additionally, the new Xpeng S5 ultra-fast charging station can add up to one kilometer of range in one second, and He outlined the company’s plans for rolling out these supercharger stations across the country.
