Imphal/August 19, 2023 (SPN) | Samajwadi Party leader, Akhilesh Yadav is facing backlash for his recent remarks on the absence of a G20 event in Manipur.
During the ‘G20 ka Chunav Connection’ session, Yadav inquired, “Numerous G20 events have taken place in Uttar Pradesh and various parts of the country, so why hasn’t any event been held in Manipur?”
His comments have raised questions as he seemed to have missed a significant event that occurred in Manipur earlier this year.
A G20 event was indeed held on February 17, 2023, at the City Convention Centre in Imphal, where a conference focusing on Opportunities for Multilateral Business Partnerships in ICT, Tourism, Healthcare, and Handloom (referred to as the B20 conference) was successfully conducted.
Akhilesh Yadav’s remarks, made during the Aaj Tak G20 Summit, suggest that he was unaware of the G20 event that took place in Manipur. Yadav questioned why no G20 event was organized in Manipur, raising doubts about the situation in the state.
However, it is crucial to note that the B20 Conference, a significant component of the G20 events, was hosted in Imphal. The conference was centered around the theme of women’s empowerment, with 50 delegates from 23 countries participating.
Akhilesh Yadav’s concerns about Manipur’s situation and its absence from the G20 event map prompted him to suggest that the BJP party, if interested, should sponsor such events instead of relying on taxpayer funds. He called attention to the government’s assertion that Manipur’s situation is stable and questioned why a G20 event was not organized there to showcase this stability.
Earlier, Chief Minister N Biren of Manipur had highlighted the B20 Conference’s success during the G20 Summit. He revealed that a US company had pledged a $500 million investment in the state, indicating the positive outcomes of the event.
In his address to the gathering of G20 delegates, Chief Minister N Biren emphasized Manipur’s potential for multilateral business partnerships across various sectors. He underscored the state’s rich cultural heritage as a backdrop for these discussions.
Furthermore, CM N Biren positioned Manipur as a pivotal gateway to Southeast Asia, making it an ideal location to implement India’s Act East Policy. He highlighted Manipur’s role as a bridge connecting South East Asia and India.
