ANSAM Appeal Manipur Govt to Restore Internet Services

Last Updated on September 24, 2023 by SPN Editor

Imphal/September 08, 2023 (SPN)| The All Naga Students Association, Manipur (ANSAM) has issued an appeal to the State Government for the restoration of internet services in the region.

In a press release, ANSAM noted that the State Government had suspended internet services on May 3 in an effort to prevent the spread of rumors, the circulation of photos and videos, and comments on social media that could potentially escalate violence in Manipur.

ANSAM expressed concern that it has been over 120 days since internet services were suspended in the state, with only conditional access provided to some broadband users and government offices. The association questioned whether the internet shutdown was being used as a means to control the flow of information and shape the narrative regarding events in Manipur.

The prolonged internet shutdown, according to ANSAM, has had a detrimental impact on communication, access to emergency services, education, healthcare, and various other sectors.

ANSAM emphasized that the internet is not only a means of communication but also a vital platform for research and information dissemination, and its shutdown affects the entire population.

In its appeal, ANSAM urged the State Government to restore internet services by allowing access to whitelisted websites and permitting specific and verified social media platforms in designated geographical locations.
