As of January 2026, the African Research Universities Alliance (ARUA) has officially launched applications for its prestigious Early-Career Research Fellowships 2026, marking a significant investment in nurturing Africa’s emerging academic talent.
Supported by the Mastercard Foundation and the Carnegie Corporation of New York, this fully funded program will select up to 42 outstanding early-career researchers to advance groundbreaking projects in a collaborative, international environment.This initiative represents a pivotal step in ARUA’s mission to elevate African universities on the global stage.
By addressing the common challenge of heavy teaching loads that hinder research progress, the fellowships provide dedicated time for scholars to focus on high-impact work, fostering innovation in critical areas such as climate change, sustainable development, health, inequality, and more.
Program Overview
The six-month residential fellowships will run in two cohorts:
Cohort 1: March to August 2026
Cohort 2: September 2026 to February 2027
Fellows will be hosted at one of ARUA’s 13 Centres of Excellence (CoEs) or 22 Africa-Europe Clusters of Research Excellence (CoREs) – dynamic hubs that bring together top researchers from across Africa and Europe to tackle pressing continental and global challenges through interdisciplinary collaboration.
Key objectives include
- Advancing ongoing research projects with readily available data
- Producing high-quality, publishable outputs (e.g., peer-reviewed journal articles)
- Contributing to workshops, seminars, and knowledge dissemination activities
- Building long-term international networks and mentorship relationships
Generous Support Package
Selected fellows will receive comprehensive funding to ensure full focus on research:
Monthly stipend: US$2,000
Modest accommodation allowance
Return economy air ticket to the host institution
Office space and access to facilities at the host CoE or CoRE
Additional support for eligible female candidates (e.g., childcare assistance)
No relocation expenses are covered, and fellows must commit to returning to their home institution upon completion.
Eligibility Criteria
This program is designed for Africa’s rising stars in academia:
- Must be an African national
- Hold a PhD completed within the last 5 years
- Affiliated as young faculty or researcher at an ARUA member university
- Working on an ongoing research project aligned with a specific CoE or CoRE thematic area, with data ready for analysis
- Able to commit to a full 6-month residency at a host institution in a different country
- Strong emphasis on gender equity: At least 70% of awards reserved for female candidates
ARUA member universities include leading institutions such as the University of Cape Town, University of Ghana, Makerere University, University of Nairobi, and others across the continent.
