COTU Urges Action Against Truck Torching Incident

Last Updated on July 16, 2023 by SPN Editor

Imphal/July 16, 2023 (SPN) | Committee on Tribal Unity (COTU), which had announced a roadblock on NH-2 two months ago strongly condemned the torching of three trucks in the Sekmai area along the NH-2 yesterday morning.

The COTU Sadar Hills has called on the authorities to take swift action against the individuals responsible for torching three trucks belonging to M/S Misao Gas Service.

The incident occurred in the Sekmai area of Imphal West, prompting the COTU to raise concerns and request intervention “before things get out of hand.”

The three trucks, which were empty and used for transporting LPG cylinders from the Sekmai LPG Bottling Plant, were targeted by a mob and set ablaze. Reports indicate that the trucks had left the bottling plant after receiving approval from the police.

The Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum (ITLF) also expressed strong condemnation of the incident during an emergency meeting held in Kangpokpi town. The torching of the trucks has led to tense situations in the Kangpokpi district, with an enraged mob deciding to block National Highway-2 in response.

It’s important to note that there has been no official declaration of a blockade at this time. The COTU’s information and publicity secretary, Thangtinlen Haokip, stated that they have been actively trying to discourage any disruptions in the movement of vehicles carrying essential items along the highway.

Thangtinlen Haokip strongly condemned the incident, claiming that the trucks were deliberately set on fire to further escalate an already volatile situation. He raised questions regarding how the mob was able to torch the trucks despite the presence of security coverage.

According to Thangtinlen Haokip, the trucks were set ablaze near the Khurkhul area. Out of the three trucks, all bearing Manipur registration numbers, one was completely destroyed by the fire, while the other two suffered partial damage.

In response to the incident, the LPG agency has lodged a complaint at the Gamnom Saparmeina police station, seeking action against those responsible for the torching of the trucks.

As the authorities investigate the incident and work towards identifying the culprits, it remains crucial to maintain calm and prevent further disruptions to essential services along the highway.

The torching of the trucks highlights the need for prompt action to ensure the safety and security of individuals and their property in the region.
