Experiencing traffic congestion and encountering multiple red lights is not only a source of frustration and stress but also contributes to environmental pollution. However, Google, a tech giant is stepping in with artificial intelligence for Traffic Management in one U.S. city.
Juliet Rothenberg from Google is on a quest to enhance the efficiency of traffic lights and make them less bothersome.
“By shifting a few seconds here and there, we can make a significant impact,” she shared.
Google’s latest initiative, Project Green Light, utilizes the company’s extensive maps database and AI to fine-tune traffic lights globally. The system proposes modifications, and it’s up to the city engineers to decide whether to implement this Traffic Management.
Laura Wojcicki, an engineer at Seattle’s Department of Transportation, shared an instance where they shifted four seconds from a north-south street to an east-west street during a specific time of the day, which helped them in Traffic Management and alleviated some of the stop-and-go traffic.
Wojcicki mentioned that a suggestion from Google’s system could be put into action in approximately five minutes.
“This has significant implications for both drivers and emissions,” Wojcicki stated.
She explained that half of the vehicle emissions at intersections result from cars accelerating after a halt. Google is confident that it can cut down these emissions by 10% — a significant reduction given that transportation is the primary source of climate-altering pollution in the U.S.
“Intersections provide a crucial leverage point for addressing climate change,” Wojcicki added.
Google offers this service at no cost and intends to extend it to thousands of cities, aiming to create what it terms a ‘green wave’ for motorists.

Project Green Light is already operational at 70 intersections across 12 cities, from Haifa to Rio de Janeiro to Bangalore. Preliminary results suggest a potential reduction in stops by up to 30% and a decrease in emissions at intersections by up to 10%.
