Manipur University Holds Mass Cleanliness Drive, Anti-Plastic Campaign Ahead of WED.

Imphal, June 4: In observance of World Environment Day 2026, the Department of Environmental Science and the NSS Cell of Manipur University jointly organised a Mass Cleanliness Drive and “No to Single-Use Plastic” Campaign under the theme “Mission LiFE: Lifestyle for Environment” on Thursday at the university campus in Canchipur.

The programme commenced at 7:30 a.m. at the Traffic Point of the university and was conducted under the guidance of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India. The initiative aimed to promote environmental responsibility and encourage sustainable lifestyles among students and the wider community.

The Mass Cleanliness Drive was led by Prof. Laishram Santosh Singh, Programme Coordinator of the NSS Cell, and Prof. R. S. Khoiyangbam, Head of the Department of Environmental Science.

The programme was supported by NSS Programme Officers Dr. H. Suraj Singh, Dr. Kh. Herachandra Singh, Dr. T. Deepamanjuri Devi and Dr. Dalip Singh. Faculty members of the Department of Environmental Science, including Dr. Konthoujam Khelchandra Singh, Dr. Wazir Alam, Dr. Maibam Dhanaraj Meitei, Dr. Chingakham Raghumani Singh and Dr. Binota Thokchom, also played a key role in organising the event.

Around 200 NSS volunteers, students, and faculty members actively participated in the programme, demonstrating a strong commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable living.

Addressing the gathering, Prof. Santosh Singh emphasised the importance of cleanliness and reducing the use of single-use plastics. He called upon students and citizens to support the national campaign “One Nation, One Mission: End Plastic Pollution” under Mission LiFE and adopt eco-friendly practices in their daily lives.

A mass awareness rally was organised across the university campus, during which participants carried placards and raised slogans promoting environmental protection and plastic-free living. The rally was followed by a mass cleanliness drive in different parts of the campus, reinforcing the message of a clean, green and sustainable environment.

In his presidential address, Prof. Khoiyangbam appreciated the active participation of volunteers and encouraged them to become ambassadors of environmental responsibility in society. He stressed that collective efforts are essential for addressing environmental challenges and ensuring a sustainable future.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks and light refreshments. Organisers stated that the campaign successfully promoted environmental awareness, community participation and sustainable action towards a cleaner and plastic-free future.
