Manipur University Hosts National Conference on Recent Trends in Mathematics

Manipur University inaugurated a two-day National Conference on ‘Recent Trends in Mathematics’ on Monday, coinciding with National Mathematics Day, drawing around 200 participants from across India, including renowned experts, researchers, and students.

Of the attendees, 77 are scheduled to present their latest research findings during the event, held at the Court Hall in Canchipur. The conference aims to foster scholarly interactions and discussions on contemporary developments in mathematics.

The inaugural session was graced by Prof. Sushant G. Ghosh, Director of the Centre for Theoretical Physics at Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi, as chief guest. Guests of honour included Prof. Tarun Kumar Das, Head of the Department of Mathematics at the University of Delhi, and Prof. Swaroop Nandan Bora from the Department of Mathematics at IIT Guwahati.Prof. K. Binod Mangang, Head of the Department of Mathematics at Manipur University, presided over the function.

Other notable attendees included Prof. Ruchi Das from the University of Delhi.In his address, Prof. Ghosh highlighted ongoing research collaborations between Jamia Millia Islamia and Manipur University, crediting retired Prof. N. G. Ibohal for building these ties.

Prof. Das emphasized the long-standing academic links with the University of Delhi, noting that many Manipur University faculty and students have pursued advanced studies there, and expressed hope for deeper institutional partnerships.

Prof. Bora shared his personal connections with the university and optimism for expanded future collaborations.Presiding over the event, Prof. Mangang stressed that National Mathematics Day holds strategic importance for India in a multipolar world, where leadership in STEM fields, anchored by mathematics, is key to global competitiveness.

The welcome address was given by Dr. Thoudam Roshan Singh, who paid tribute to Srinivasa Ramanujan’s contributions and the role of mathematical thinking in innovation. Dr. Kh. Herachandra proposed the vote of thanks, acknowledging support from Vice-Chancellor Prof. N. Lokendra Singh and sponsors including the State Bank of India (Manipur University Branch) and Delhi Book Store, New Delhi.

The programme was hosted by Dr. Benaki Lairenjam.The conference continues through December 23, providing a platform for advancing mathematical research and networking among scholars.
