Imphal, July 5: The National Service Scheme (NSS) Cell of Manipur University on Sunday organised a one-day panel discussion on the theme “Manipur: Contested Diversity, Violence and Development” at the Conference Hall of the Department of Anthropology, Manipur University.
The programme brought together academicians, researchers, students, and members of civil society to deliberate on the challenges arising from the prolonged conflict in Manipur and to explore pathways towards peace, inclusive development, and social harmony.
The event was held under the guidance of Prof. Rajkumar Bhubon Singh, Director of UGC-MMTTC and Head of the Department of Chemistry, Manipur University. The programme was convened by Dr. Thiyam Bharat Singh, Associate Professor, CSSI, while it was presided over by Prof. L. Santosh Singh, Coordinator of the NSS Cell, Manipur University.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Thiyam Bharat Singh said the panel aimed at academic deliberation on issues of diversity, violence, and development in Manipur. He noted that while “unity in diversity” is expected to drive progress in a multi-ethnic society, in Manipur the same diversity has often led to conflict and violence.
He added that identity politics among communities has hindered the development process and caused significant public suffering. He stressed the need for deeper academic engagement and solution-oriented discussions on these complex issues. The discussion, held in two sessions, focused on analyzing these challenges and exploring possible solutions.
The programme was also attended by Dr. Malem Ningthouja (Assistant Professor, Dhanamanjuri University) and Dr. Sapam Dilipkumar Singh (Assistant Professor, Department of Law, Manipur University), along with other participants who shared perspectives on social harmony, education, and development challenges in the state.
Senior journalist and eminent speaker Pradip Phanjoubam also attended the event. In his address, he discussed aspects of Naga and Mizo nationalism and the historical spread of Christianity in these regions. He also referred to the social histories of the communities and broader regional developments in the Northeast.
The speakers highlighted that educational institutions play a crucial role not only in academics but also in promoting social awareness, responsible citizenship, and constructive dialogue during periods of social tension.
The programme concluded with an interactive session where participants shared their views and suggestions for promoting peace, unity, and sustainable development in Manipur.
