Manipur University Hosts Summer Camp in Mathematics for Undergraduate Students

Imphal, July 8: A two-week Summer Camp in Mathematics organised by the Department of Mathematics, Manipur University, in collaboration with the Manipur Mathematical Society and the Manipur University Mathematics Alumni Association, concluded successfully on Wednesday.

The camp, which began on June 29, was conducted over ten days, including weekends. It provided undergraduate students from different parts of the state and outside Manipur an opportunity to explore mathematical concepts beyond the regular classroom curriculum and strengthen their problem solving abilities.

Around 32 students took part in the programme. The participants included students from Miranda House, University of Delhi; St Edmund’s College, Shillong; and various colleges of Manipur. During the camp, the students attended four interactive classes daily.

The academic sessions covered a wide range of topics, including Logic and Reasoning, Abstract Algebra, Real Analysis, Complex Analysis, Linear Algebra, Metric Spaces, Topology, MATLAB and Differential Equations. A special session on “Problem Solving in Mathematics and in Life” was also conducted as part of the programme.

The inaugural function was graced by Prof Sumitra Phanjoubam, Vice Chancellor in charge of Manipur University, as the chief guest. Speaking on the occasion, she appreciated the organisers for dedicating their vacation to academic activities during a challenging period in the state. She also assured continued support from the university for such meaningful academic initiatives.

Prof K Binod Mangang, Head of the Department of Mathematics, Manipur University, presided over the inaugural programme. He encouraged the students to actively interact with the resource persons and make the best use of the camp.

H Jayantkumar Singh, president of the Manipur Mathematical Society, attended the programme as guest of honour. He opened the academic sessions with a discussion on “What is Mathematics?”, highlighting the logical and philosophical foundations of the subject.

At the valedictory function, Prof Ng Ibohal Singh, retired professor and former Head of the Department of Mathematics, Manipur University, attended as the chief guest. Addressing the participants, he said mathematics is built on truth and reasoning and continues to play a central role in human progress.

“I trust in the truth; thus, I trust in mathematics,” he told the students.

Prof K Binod Mangang congratulated the participants for successfully completing the camp and encouraged them to apply the knowledge and skills gained during the programme in their future academic pursuits.

The programme concluded with the distribution of certificates to the participants, followed by a vote of thanks.
