Imphal, June 26, 2026: Manipur University NSS Cell on Friday organised a one-day awareness programme on the “Mission of Drug-Free Campus” at the Court Hall of the University, Canchipur, to mark the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
The programme was held under the aegis of the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India. It brought together students, NSS volunteers, faculty members and university officials to promote awareness on the dangers of drug abuse and the need to build a safe, healthy and responsible campus environment.
Vice-Chancellor (in-charge) Prof. Sumitra Phanjoubam attended the programme as Chief Guest. Registrar Prof. M. Premjit Singh, District Youth Officer Ms. Princi Gupta, and Dr. Sapam Dilipkumar Singh, Assistant Professor, Department of Law, Manipur University, attended as Guests of Honour. Prof. Laishram Santosh Singh, Programme Coordinator, NSS Cell, Manipur University, presided over the function.
Addressing the gathering, Prof. Sumitra Phanjoubam said the programme was a timely reminder of the harmful impact of drug abuse on individuals, families, society, the state and the nation. She appreciated the NSS Cell for organising the event and thanked students and NSS volunteers for participating in large numbers despite the ongoing vacation period.
Referring to the message “Say Yes to Life and No to Drugs,” VC (In-charge) Prof. Sumitra Phanjoubam said the University community must work collectively to create a healthier and drug-free environment. She observed that students face many pressures, including academic stress, competition and anxiety about the future, and warned that smoking, drinking or drug use as a temporary escape can destroy lives and careers.
She encouraged students to adopt positive and lasting responses through studies, sports, yoga, community engagement, counselling and supportive peer networks. She also said teachers must act as mentors and students must serve as ambassadors of a drug-free campus.
Registrar Prof. M. Premjit Singh, in his address, referred to the historical background of drug abuse and illicit trafficking, including the Opium War in China. He said the observance of June 26 reminds society of the importance of health, human rights and a deeper understanding of why people fall into drug abuse.
Prof. M. Premjit said strict laws exist to deal with drug trafficking, but legal measures alone are not enough. He said the real solution lies in educating citizens and building a society where individuals are strong enough to reject drugs even when exposed to them.
Ms. Princi Gupta urged students to stay away from harmful substances and unhealthy habits that may appear to provide temporary relief. She said drugs are not permanent healers and encouraged students to adopt natural and healthy practices, including yoga, to cope with stress and personal challenges.
A pledge against drug abuse was administered during the programme under the guidance of Prof. Sumitra Phanjoubam. Participants pledged not to indulge in drug abuse, to advise family members and friends against drug use, and to contribute to the rescue and guidance of those affected by drug abuse.
Dr. Sapam Dilipkumar Singh conducted a technical session with students on the legal aspects of drug-related cases. He discussed the criminalisation of drug offences, relevant laws and punishments, the role of international drug cartels, the Golden Triangle, and the importance of observing the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
In his presidential address and vote of thanks, Prof. Laishram Santosh Singh reaffirmed Manipur University’s commitment to maintaining a drug-free, clean and safe learning environment. He also stressed the importance of campus beautification, waste management and academic integrity as shared responsibilities of students, teachers and staff.
The programme concluded with a message that the University community must unite to build a drug-free campus and promote the spirit of “Yes to Life, No to Drugs.”
