Imphal, November 6, 2026: Manipur University and the Institute of Bioresources and Sustainable Development (IBSD) have renewed their academic and joint research partnership, with plans to explore wider collaboration across Life Sciences, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Physics and Statistics.

The renewed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) seeks to create more opportunities for faculty members and research scholars to work together and produce joint research publications, according to a press release issued by Manipur University.

Prof. M. Premjit Singh, Registrar of Manipur University, and Dr. H. Nanaocha Sharma, Director (Additional Charge), BRIC–IBSD, signed the agreement at the Vice-Chancellor’s Secretariat on November 6. Vice-Chancellor Prof. R.K. Hemakumar Singh attended the signing.

IBSD is an autonomous institute under the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India.

Speaking on the occasion, Vice Chancellor Prof. Hemakumar emphasised the importance of combining the expertise of the two institutions to address Manipur’s research and development needs. He expressed hope that the partnership would enable faculty members and research scholars to undertake collaborative work with practical benefits for society.

Prof. N. Mohilal Meitei, Dean of the School of Life Sciences, highlighted the scope for extending joint academic research across disciplines. Alongside Life Sciences and Biotechnology, he identified Chemistry, Physics and Statistics as areas in which wider cooperation could be explored.

He also pointed to opportunities for joint publications, building on earlier collaborative work by researchers from the two institutions.

The original agreement, signed on October 12, 2020, provided a framework for collaborative research and academic exchange. The renewal follows the expiry of its five-year term and carries forward that institutional partnership.

For Manipur’s academic community, the proposed expansion across disciplines could give researchers more opportunities to combine different fields of expertise. The university’s announcement, however, did not specify individual research projects or a timeline for their implementation.

The signing was witnessed on behalf of Manipur University by Prof. N. Mohilal Meitei; Prof. Ksh. Birla Singh, Head of the Department of Zoology; and Prof. Ksh. Lalbihari Singha, Head of the Department of Botany.

BRIC–IBSD was represented as witnesses by Dr. Ch. Brajakishor Singh, Scientist E; Dr. Sudripta Das, Scientist F; and Dr. W. Mohendro Singh, Senior Administrative Officer.
