The Manipur University Working Women’s Association (MUWWA) marked the 86th Nupi Lan Ningsing Numit on December 15 at the Women’s Facility Centre in Manipur University, highlighting the enduring legacy of Manipuri women as peace-builders and agents of change.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. N. Lokendra Singh, the chief guest, praised Manipuri women for their historic contributions as mediators and described MUWWA as the “conscience keeper” of the university campus.
He noted the strong representation of women in leadership roles, with females comprising nearly 51% of the student body, and referenced their prominence in Meitei mythology, such as in the epic Numit Kappa.
Guest of Honour Prof. Sumitra Phanjoubam paid tribute to the women who resisted British oppression during the Nupi Lan uprisings, emphasizing the power of collective women’s action in shaping history. She urged women to prioritize self-care, including mental and physical health, to better contribute to society.
MUWWA President Prof. Memcha Loitongbam, who presided over the event, highlighted the ongoing relevance of Nupi Lan in modern Manipuri society.
The program, attended by MUWWA members, female research scholars, and students, was compered by Prof. Toijam Tampha Devi from the Department of Manipuri. It concluded with a vote of thanks by General Secretary Dr. K. Sobita Devi.
