Manipur Rajya Sabha MP, Maharaja Leishemba Sanajaoba on Wednesday said that India was losing territory along the Manipur-Myanmar border due to faulty border pillars and demanded that the Indo-Myanmar border issue be taken up diplomatically with the neighboring country.
Maharaja Leishemba has raised the issue under ‘Special Mentions’ in the Upper House of the Parliament.
Leishemba further said a few months back officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) came to Manipur to look into the matter pertaining to reported irregularities about border pillars on the Indo-Myanmar border.
Tagging Prime Minister, Union Home Minister, Union Defence Minister, Chief Minister, and PMO, Leishemba Sanajaoba tweeted, “Today in Rajya Sabha, I raised a very important matter for settling/ solving the long Indo – Myanmar Boundary ( Border pillars) Issues at Diplomatic Level with Myanmar to save the Territorial Loss of Manipur/ India. @narendramodi @AmitShah @rajnathsingh @NBirenSingh @PMOIndia“
He said Chief Minister N Biren has made a request to Union Home Minister Amit Shah to re-examine the contentious boundary issue. “Meanwhile, boundary fencing work along the Indo-Myanmar border has been stopped by local people because the border pillars are shifting towards Manipur leading to India’s territorial loss, he added.
Maharaja Sanajaoba also stated that though there were border disputes between Manipur and Myanmar even during the British Raj, after Independence a boundary agreement was arrived at in 1967 to settle the issue. “Still there are certain unsettled areas at the ground level ignored both by New Delhi and Naypyidaw. I would like the Government of India to revisit the issue and kindly take up the matter at the diplomatic level with Myanmar for settling the Indo-Myanmar border issue once and for all. Manipur has already lost large tracts of land to Myanmar,” he added.
Due to the border dispute, locals of the border area have been boycotting the border fencing work as some of the border pillars are found shifting towards the Manipur sector boundary, he added.
The disputed border pillars along the Indo-Myanmar border issue are pillar number 64 to 68, pillar number 75 to 79, border pillar number 88 to 95 and old border pillar 80 to 82, he informed.
