Imphal, July 22: The DBT-BUILDER Instrumentation Facility, Manipur University, on Tuesday organised a Laboratory Tour and Exposure Programme for B.Sc. 8th Semester students of Mayai Lambi College, Manipur, at the university campus in Canchipur.
The programme was conducted with financial support from the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India. It aimed to provide students with direct exposure to advanced research facilities, modern scientific instruments, laboratory procedures, and research-oriented academic practices.
During the programme, the Mayai Lambi College students were introduced to various sophisticated instruments used in biological sciences and interdisciplinary research. Experts explained the basic principles, functions, and applications of the equipment, helping the students understand how such instruments are used in scientific investigation and advanced laboratory work.
The resource persons also highlighted the importance of laboratory safety protocols, standard operating procedures, and good laboratory practices. The exposure programme sought to familiarise students not only with scientific tools but also with the discipline, precision, and responsibility required in research environments.
The participating students interacted with scientists and technical staff of the facility. The interaction provided them with insights into research methodologies, laboratory management, and possible career opportunities in science, biotechnology, and research-related fields.
The DBT-BUILDER Instrumentation Facility at Manipur University has emerged as one of the important centres for advanced research training in the region, particularly in the field of Biological Sciences. Over the past five years, the facility has trained more than 950 faculty members, Ph.D. scholars, postgraduate and undergraduate students, as well as higher secondary students through laboratory training, workshops, and exposure programmes.
The facility is coordinated by Prof. G.A. Shantibala Devi, Prof. Ksh. Birla Singh, and Prof. Th. Binoy Singh of the Departments of Zoology and Botany, Manipur University.
The day-to-day operations of the facility are supported by four dedicated project staff members, who assist in the smooth functioning of the laboratory and the successful implementation of its academic and research activities.
The exposure programme is expected to help students develop a better understanding of scientific research infrastructure and encourage young learners to pursue higher studies and careers in science.
