Naorem Mohen, editor of Signpost News, launched his debut book, In the Lap of Koubru, a poignant collection of 11 short stories inspired by survivors of the ethnic violence that erupted in Manipur on May 3, 2023. Published by Yai Publications, the book was unveiled at Nakama restaurant in Sagolband Tera Lukram Leirak, Imphal West, in a ceremony attended by around 100 notable figures, including professors from Manipur University, social workers, civil society members, and students yesterday.
The launch event was graced by Advocate Pushpa Gurumayum, Secretary of the High Court Bar Association Manipur, as Chief Guest, historian Longjam Munindro as Guest of Honour, and Dr. Achom Roshankumar, Associate Professor at GP Women’s College, DM University, who presided over the function. Dr. Arambam Noni, Associate Professor of Political Science at DM University, introduced the book, highlighting its significance.
Dr. Naorem Thoinu, Owner of Yai Publications, delivered a speech emphasizing the newly established publishing house’s commitment to nurturing talent, stating, “We hope to launch more authors in the future, and Yai Publications would be happy to publish your original works.”
Presented as fiction, In the Lap of Koubru explores themes of daring escapes, selfless acts, enduring humanity, and the transformation of ordinary individuals into unsung heroes. It also delves into the profound trauma faced by approximately 70,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Manipur’s relief camps. The stories aim to spotlight the resilience and compassion within the Manipuri community, offering a balanced perspective on human nature. “The narratives showcase the brighter side, reminding us that humanity persists even in the darkest times,” Mohen said.
Mohen, reflecting on the book’s creation, described it as a “creative journey to heal Manipur” and a step toward peace and reconciliation. Haunted by victims’ accounts two years after the violence began, he carefully selected 11 stories from countless narratives of hardship and resilience. “I couldn’t forget those stories—I pieced this book together bit by bit, without concealing any details,” he shared.
The book’s evocative excerpts capture the survivors’ struggles vividly. One dialogue portrays the loss of dignity: “‘What have we become? Ghosts in our own land?’ Gambhir whispered. ‘Surviving? This isn’t life. It’s a slow death… I was a farmer. I had land, respect. Now? I’m nothing.’” Another passage depicts the despair in a relief camp: “Lingjel’s health crumbled; infections festered, her mind drowned in nightmares… Suicide beckoned like a dark friend.” A philosophical reflection underscores the balance of human nature: “For every bitter soul, there’s a sweet one; for every dark heart, a light.”
Mohen hopes the book will spark introspection about Manipur’s path to recovery, asking, “How can Manipur heal? Who bears responsibility? What roles have allies played?” He welcomes reader feedback to shape future editions.
In the Lap of Koubru is now available in the market, with early reviews praising its sensitive portrayal of human endurance. The book stands as a powerful testament to resilience and a call for healing in Manipur’s ongoing journey toward peace.
