Rajya Sabha MP Leishemba Sanajaoba paid floral tribute to the martyrs of June 18, 2001, at Kekrupat. “Amidst this incessant rains, I paid my befitting floral tributes to the Martyrs of June 18th, 2001 at Kekrupat, Imphal… May the great souls rest in peace. Because of your supreme sacrifice, we could save our Territorial Integrity…and will never allow to disintegrate our state at any cost,” the MP said in a Facebook post.
The 21st The Great June Uprising Unity Day 2022 is being observed in Manipur in commemoration of the 18 martyred souls who laid down their lives during agitation to save Manipur territory in June 2001.
The day is observed under the theme “Let Manipur live and grow together” at Kekrupat in Imphal.
On June 14, 2001, the NSCN (I-M) and the Government of India signed a ceasefire agreement in Bangkok, which included “without territorial limit”.
A large number of people came out on the streets and agitated, demanding the withdrawal of the three words. They protest voluntarily for the integrity of Manipur, bowing never allow to disintegrate Manipur.
During the unprecedented agitation on June 18, 2001, 18 people were martyred. The protesters also burnt down the Manipur Assembly building and attacked the CM bungalow.
Since then, the United Committee Manipur (UCM) and the All Manipur United Club Organisation (AMUCO) have been observing the day annually as The Great June Uprising, Unity Day by paying floral tributes to the 18 patriots constructed at Kekrupat in Imphal.
