Imphal/August 05, 2023 (SPN) | The Al-Qaeda terrorist group’s Indian branch, AQIS (Al-Qaeda in Indian Subcontinent), has issued a threat to the Modi Government in connection with a viral video from Manipur.
In its Urdu magazine “Nawa-e-ghazwat-ul-Hind,” AQIS has warned India about the consequences of the Manipur incident. The group alleges that under the Modi government, Muslim and Christian women are not safe.
AQIS alleges that under the leadership of the Modi Government, the safety of Muslim and Christian women is compromised, implying a concerning lack of protection for these minority communities
Furthermore, AQIS criticizes the United States and President Joe Biden’s administration for their support of India, despite incidents like the one in Manipur. The terror group finds fault in this support, given the perceived lack of accountability for such events.
The terrorist organization has also made allegations about the involvement of Hindutva elements in attacks against Kuki Christians.
This latest threat and condemnation concerning the Manipur incident exemplify Al Qaeda’s continued efforts to exploit local conflicts and grievances for its own extremist agenda.
This marks the first instance of a jihadist group specifically targeting India over the Manipur ethnic violence. In the past, AQIS has consistently attempted to incite Indian Muslims against the Modi government, reflecting its ongoing efforts to exploit local incidents for broader ideological purposes.
Following the warning issued by AQIS, questions have arisen regarding the potential involvement of Al-Qaeda in the ongoing violence in Manipur. The suggestion that Al-Qaeda might be providing assistance to Kuki narco-terrorists raises serious security concerns.
The convergence of their functional approach, engagement in illicit activities like poppy cultivation, and shared demand for a separate homeland (AQIS supports Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar) create a potent and worrying combination.
The future of Al-Qaeda aligning with Kuki narco-terrorists could significantly amplify the security threat not only in Manipur, but entire Northeastern region.
The operational cooperation between these two militants, especially considering Al-Qaeda’s international reach and expertise in terrorism, could lead to a more complex and dangerous landscape in the region.
The Manipur violence which started on May 3 with Churachandpur as the Epicenter has displaced more than 60,000 people and killed around 200 people from both Meitei and Kuki communities. The threat by a Jihadi terror group hints at the role of foreign hands in the ongoing violence in Manipur.
