ZUF Raises Alarm Over Land Encroachment and Poppy Cultivation

The Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF) has voiced serious concerns regarding the construction of the so-called Tiger/German Road and the cultivation of poppy plants in foothill areas traditionally claimed by the Zeliangrong and broader Naga communities. The statement was released on October 7 by Franky Gonmei of the ZUF’s Ministry of Information & Publicity.

The Front emphasized that the ancestral lands of the Zeliangrong people must remain free from disturbance or encroachment by any group under any circumstances. Despite exercising patience amid ongoing ethnic conflicts plaguing the region, the ZUF warned that it will no longer stay silent if the fundamental rights of the Zeliangrong people continue to be violated.

In a separate appeal, the ZUF urged Kuki armed groups to cease establishing unauthorized check posts and frisking daily commuters along the Asian Development Bank (ADB) Road between Kangchup and Waphong (Talamlong). The Front highlighted that such actions are escalating tensions and disrupting peaceful coexistence among neighboring communities.

Additionally, the ZUF strongly condemned poppy cultivation in Pongringlong (Charoipantongba) and Talamlong (Waphong), noting its detrimental effects on the environment and the moral and social fabric of society.

Reaffirming its resolve, the ZUF pledged to safeguard the Zeliangrong ancestral land at all costs while fostering peace and harmonious relations with neighboring communities.
