Imphal, June 21: Manipur University celebrated the 12th International Day of Yoga, 2026, on Saturday at Dr. Kamal Indoor Stadium, Manipur University Campus, Canchipur, Imphal, under the global theme “Yoga for Healthy Ageing.”
The programme was organised by the Department of Yoga, Manipur University, in collaboration with the NSS Cell, Manipur University, under the aegis of the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India.
The celebration witnessed the presence and active participation of Prof. Sumitra Phanjoubam, Vice-Chancellor in-charge, Manipur University; Prof. M. Premjit Singh, Registrar; Deans of various Schools; Heads of Departments; faculty members from different departments; officers of various sections; non-teaching staff; students from different departments; students of the Department of Yoga; and NSS volunteers of the university.
A total of 120 participants attended the programme.

The programme commenced at 6:00 AM with the registration and assembly of participants at the venue. Prof. Dr. Laishram Santosh Singh, Professor, Department of Physical Education and Sports Science and Secretary of the organising committee, delivered the welcome address.
In his address, Prof. Singh welcomed the dignitaries and participants and highlighted the significance of observing the International Day of Yoga. He also spoke on the relevance of this year’s theme, “Yoga for Healthy Ageing,” in promoting physical, mental and social well-being.
From 6:30 AM to 7:45 AM, the participants joined the live telecast of the Common Yoga Protocol session led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi through the Ministry of AYUSH official YouTube channel. The Prime Minister led the national celebration from Kolkata’s historic Red Road, where thousands of participants gathered to perform yoga, while people across India and other parts of the world joined virtually.
Following the live telecast, the Vice-Chancellor in-charge, university officials, faculty members, staff, students, NSS volunteers and other participants practised the Common Yoga Protocol. The session included loosening exercises, standing and sitting postures, pranayama practices and meditation.
The collective participation reflected the university community’s commitment to health, discipline and social harmony through yoga. The celebration also served as a reminder of yoga’s role in supporting healthy and graceful ageing, particularly at a time when public health concerns increasingly require preventive and holistic approaches.
Towards the conclusion of the programme, Prof. Sumitra Phanjoubam addressed the gathering and appreciated the efforts of the Department of Yoga and the NSS Cell in organising the celebration. She encouraged the participants to incorporate yoga into their daily lives for personal well-being, inner balance and collective welfare.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Dr. Kuntal Ghosh, Assistant Professor, Department of Yoga and Convener of the programme. He expressed gratitude to the Vice-Chancellor in-charge, Registrar, Finance section, Deans, Heads of Departments, faculty members, staff, students, NSS volunteers and all participants for their involvement and support in making the celebration successful.
