In a vibrant celebration of India’s ancient martial heritage, the All India Inter-University Thang-Ta (Men & Women) Competition 2025-26 burst into action on Monday at the Dr. Kamal Indoor Stadium in Manipur University, Canchipur.
This marks the first time the university is organizing the prestigious national event, drawing talent from across the country.
The glittering opening ceremony brought together a distinguished presidium, including Thokchom Satyabrata, Speaker of the Manipur Legislative Assembly; Prof. N. Lokendra, Vice-Chancellor of Manipur University; Prof. M. Premjit, Registrar; Dr. Surjeet Singh, Director of Physical Education at the University of Kashmir and AIU Observer; N. Kunjarani, Commandant CRPF Group Centre Imphal and 2004 Athens Olympian; and H. Premkumar, President of the Thang-Ta Federation of India, among other dignitaries.
Around 150 athletes from 30 universities nationwide are competing in the event, which runs until April 9. The tournament features intense bouts in multiple weight categories, showcasing the dynamic sword-and-spear techniques, unarmed combat, and traditional forms of this Manipuri martial art.
Addressing the gathering, Speaker Thokchom Satyabrata praised the organizing committee for successfully bringing this grand platform to life.
He spoke passionately about Thang-Ta’s deep roots in Manipuri identity and its role as a symbol of cultural pride and resilience. He encouraged participating students to display their skills fearlessly and extended warm wishes for inspiring performances.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. N. Lokendra echoed these sentiments, offering a brief reflection on Manipuri history and the central place of indigenous martial arts like Thang-Ta in shaping the region’s warrior ethos and cultural legacy.

Organizers and spectators alike hailed the event as a significant step in promoting Thang-Ta—a living tradition that blends self-defense, spirituality, and cultural expression—at the university level.
