The Department of South East Asian Studies, Manipur University (MU), in collaboration with N. Gopal College, Lamphelpat and Kamakhya Pemton College, Hiyangthang, inaugurated a two-day international seminar on “Cultural Bridges and Economic Links: The Role of the Indian Diaspora in Shaping India–Southeast Asia Relations” today.
The seminar, sponsored by the Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Institute of Asian Studies (MAKAIAS), Kolkata, is being held at the Court Hall of the Vice-Chancellor’s Secretariat, Canchipur. It aims to explore the historical, cultural, economic, and strategic significance of the Indian diaspora in strengthening ties between India and Southeast Asian countries.
Prof. N. Lokendra Singh, Vice-Chancellor of Manipur University, graced the inaugural session as Chief Guest. In his address, he highlighted the vital role of the Indian diaspora as living bridges connecting cultures and economies under India’s Act East Policy. He stressed that international relations are shaped not only by governments but also by people, migration, memory, and economic activities.
The keynote address was delivered by Dr. Phan Anh Tu, Dean, Faculty of Cultural Studies, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City. He presented on the economic and cultural contributions of the Indian community in Saigon during the French colonial period.
The session was presided over by Prof. Memcha Loitongbam, Dean, School of Social Sciences, MU. Guests of Honour included Dr. Wahengbam Nimai Singh, Principal, Kamakhya Pemton College, and Prof. Sh. Shantibala Devi, Principal, N. Gopal College.
Dr. Loitongbam Bishwanjit Singh, Assistant Professor, Department of South East Asian Studies, delivered the welcome address, while Dr. M. Monica Devi proposed the vote of thanks.
The two-day seminar will feature technical sessions on historical ties, colonial migrations, contemporary socio-economic contributions, diaspora identity, and policy recommendations for enhancing India’s engagement with Southeast Asia.
