Manipur University kicked off a two-day Workshop-cum-Research Colloquium, focusing on the cutting-edge applications of artificial intelligence across multidisciplinary fields today.
Titled “Advances in Computer Science and Applications,” the event—organized by the Department of Computer Science—was held at the Court Hall of the Vice-Chancellor’s Secretariat in Canchipur, Imphal.
It served as a key pre-summit academic activity building momentum toward the India AI Impact Summit 2026, India’s landmark global AI gathering scheduled for February 19–20, 2026, at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi.
The workshop brought together researchers, scholars, and experts to discuss emerging AI opportunities and challenges, exchange innovative ideas, drive AI-powered research breakthroughs, foster stronger academia-industry partnerships, and develop sustainable, ethical AI solutions for complex societal and infrastructure problems.
Inaugurating the programme, Vice-Chancellor Prof. N. Lokendra Singh served as chief guest. Guests of honour included Prof. Sumitra Phanjoubam (Dean, School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences), Prof. Ch. Ibohal Meitei (Director, Research and Development Cell), and Registrar Prof. M. Premjit Singh.
The session was presided over by Dr. Khumukcham Robindro Singh, Head of the Department of Computer Science.
Addressing the gathering, Prof. Lokendra Singh highlighted the Government of India’s vision for transforming the nation into a developed economy by balancing priorities around people, planet, and progress.
He highlighted AI’s revolutionary potential across industries but emphasized the need for comprehensive human training, strong governance frameworks, and vigilant oversight to ensure its responsible and equitable deployment.
He also noted the steady evolution and expansion of the university’s Computer Science Department.
In his presidential remarks, Dr. Khumukcham Robindro Singh described the workshop as an essential preparatory step for the India AI Impact Summit 2026—the first major global AI summit hosted in the Global South.
Organized under the flagship IndiaAI Mission by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, the summit aims to fortify India’s national AI ecosystem, advance ethical, inclusive, and responsible AI practices, and establish the country as a leading global AI hub, aligning with the broader goal of achieving developed-nation status by 2047.
