The DBT-funded programme provided hands-on training in PCR, gel electrophoresis, SDS-PAGE and restriction enzyme digestion to participants from Manipur and Assam.
IMPHAL, September 29, 2026: A seven-day National Level Training Programme on “Basics and Advanced Techniques of Molecular Biology”, organised by DBT-BUILDER, Manipur University, concluded at the University after providing participants with hands-on exposure to key molecular biology techniques.
Funded by the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India, the programme was held from September 22 to 28 at the central facilities of Manipur University, Canchipur.
Around 15 participants attended the training, including physicians from the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS), faculty members, research scholars and project fellows.
Participants represented institutions including Dibrugarh University in Assam, colleges in Manipur and different departments of Manipur University.
Hands-on molecular biology training
A major focus of the seven-day programme was practical laboratory training.
Dr Santa Naorem, Project Scientist, DBT-BUILDER, Manipur University, and Shimrata Laimayum, Technical Assistant, DBT-BUILDER, provided hands-on training to the participants.
The programme covered key molecular biology techniques including Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), gel electrophoresis, SDS-PAGE and restriction enzyme digestion.
The sessions provided participants with practical exposure to laboratory methods widely used in molecular biology research.
Participants from different academic backgrounds
The inaugural session was attended by Prof. N. Mohilal Meitei, Dean, School of Life Sciences, as Chief Guest; Prof. Kananbala Sarangthem, Head, Department of Botany, as Guest of Honour; and Prof. Ksh. Birla Singh, Co-PI, DBT-BUILDER, Manipur University, as Chairman.
The participation of physicians, faculty members, research scholars and project fellows also gave the programme an interdisciplinary character, bringing researchers and professionals from different academic backgrounds into a common laboratory training environment.
The seven-day programme concluded with a valedictory session attended by Prof. L. Shanjukumar Singh, Dean, School of Agricultural Sciences, and Prof. Ksh. Birla Singh as presidium members.
Participation certificates were distributed to all delegates during the valedictory session.
The programme forms part of efforts under DBT-BUILDER at Manipur University to strengthen practical exposure to modern laboratory techniques and research capacity in the biological sciences.
