Manipur Should Not Be Resting Place for Deceased Foreigners – Noutuneshwari

Imphal/ August 04, 2023 (SPN) | Retired Session Judge Aribam Noutuneshwari said that Manipur should not be a resting place for deceased foreigners. She further calls for thorough verification of the bodies of Kukis at the morgues of RIMS and JNIMS.

Noutuneshwari also urged the State government to return the bodies of Meiteis in Churachandpur district hospital to their families. Additionally, she requests the government to ascertain the number of missing Meitei people amid the ongoing conflict.

Accusing the Central Government of overlooking the hostilities of infiltrators and armed Kuki militants against the Meiteis, the retired Session Judge Noutuneshwari advocates for the establishment of “Kukiland” and suggests that the remains of slain Kukis be buried in Gujarat, the birthplace of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, if the government truly cares for the Kukis.

Advocate Khaidem Mani, the Chairperson of Citizens for Justice (CFJ), criticizes the BJP Government for not taking action against its own MLA, Paolienlal Haokip, who advocated for the disintegration of Manipur to create three Union Territories.

Mani highlights the need for implementing the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the state and demands the booking of Kuki militants under the National Security Act (NSA).

Meanwhile, the Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, Nityanand Rai, representing the Government of India, has assured that every effort will be made to resolve the sensitive issue of last rites for those killed in the ethnic violence.

The government is committed to reaching an amicable solution that satisfies all parties involved within a stipulated period of seven days.

Manipur State Law and Legislative Affairs Minister, Th Basantakumar while briefing the media on Thursday at the Auditorium of DIPR, Manipur informed that the High Court of Manipur has passed an order in connection with a Public Interest Litigation filed by International Meeteis Forum.

Acting on the PIL (No.33 of 2023: International Meeteis Forum Vs State of Manipur & ors), the Court has directed the State Government and Central Government and the law enforcing agencies/personnel as well as the public belonging to both the communities to maintain status quo ante at the land in question, he said.

The Court also directed the Central and State Governments to take appropriate effective steps to control law and order problems in and around the land in question, he said.

The Court went on to direct the respondents including Central and State Governments and other aggrieved parties to make an effort for an amicable settlement regarding the issue.

The Court also gave the private respondents and all the representatives of the Kuki-Zo community the liberty to apply to the official respondents for allotment of land for the purpose of burial within a period of one week, he added.

Th Basantakumar also highlighted the content of a letter sent by Union Minister of State, Home Affairs, Government of India, Nityanand Rai which appealed to all concerned to maintain peace and communal harmony.

The Government of India had also assured that it will spare no effort to resolve the issue for the last rites of the mortal remains of those killed in ethnic violence amicably to the utmost satisfaction of all parties within a period of seven days, he said.

Th Basantakumar also appealed not to rely on rumors but to go for authentic information.
