Manipur University Free Health Camp Draws 300 Participants

Medical teams from four healthcare institutions provide specialist consultations, cancer screening awareness and preventive health services.

Imphal, October 16, 2026: Around 300 people participated in a Mega Free Health Camp organised at the Manipur University Health Centre on Friday as part of the Seva Sankalp Abhiyan 2026. The programme brought together doctors and healthcare professionals from four medical institutions to provide free consultations, health screening and preventive healthcare awareness to students, research scholars, university employees and residents of nearby communities.

The camp was jointly organised by the NSS Cell and Health Centre of Manipur University, the State NSS Cell, Government of Manipur, and My Bharat Manipur State under the aegis of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India. Aadarsh Hospital, Karkinos Healthcare, Iland Hospital and Medilane collaborated in providing medical services.

Vice-Chancellor Calls for Greater Healthcare Collaboration

Inaugurating the camp, Manipur University Vice-Chancellor Prof. R.K. Hemakumar Singh appreciated the contributions of the participating hospitals, medical professionals and organising teams. He observed that universities have responsibilities extending beyond teaching and research and can contribute meaningfully to public welfare through collaborative initiatives.

He encouraged continued cooperation between Manipur University and healthcare institutions to organise similar programmes in the future, particularly for students, research scholars, employees and people living in surrounding communities.

The programme was attended by Registrar Prof. M. Premjit Singh, Finance Officer Prof. Laishram Rajendrakumar Singh, Dean of the School of Life Sciences Prof. N. Mohilal Meitei, Dean of Students’ Welfare Prof. Ch. Ibohal Singh, My Bharat State Director W. Paulina Monsang, NSS Programme Coordinator Prof. Laishram Santosh Singh and University Health Centre Medical Officer Dr. Lamabam Pinky Devi.

Preventive Healthcare and Early Detection in Focus

Speaking on the objectives of the camp, Prof. Laishram Santosh Singh emphasised that regular medical examinations and health monitoring should become part of everyday life rather than measures taken only after illness develops.

He said educational institutions could play an important role in promoting health awareness among students, teaching and non-teaching staff and neighbouring communities.

Dr. Lamabam Pinky Devi outlined the services available at the camp, including general medicine, gynaecology, orthopaedics, dental consultations, eye care, palliative care and counselling.

Particular attention was given to breast cancer and cervical cancer screening awareness, highlighting the importance of early detection and timely medical consultation.

She explained that the initiative was not limited to university students and employees but also extended to residents of nearby localities, university residential quarters and villages connected with the University’s community outreach activities.

Dr. Y. Indibor Singh, Director of Karkinos Healthcare, Manipur, urged people not to neglect their health amid increasing academic, professional and personal responsibilities.

He encouraged individuals to devote at least 30 minutes to an hour daily to maintaining their physical well-being and stressed the importance of regular health examinations instead of waiting for symptoms to develop.

Four Healthcare Institutions Extend Specialist Services

Karkinos Healthcare deployed a multidisciplinary medical team comprising Dr. R.K. Gautamjit, Consultant in Head and Neck Care; Dr. James Thingujam, Onco-Gynaecologist; Dr. Nandan Choudhary, Consultant in Palliative Medicine; and Dr. Annie, Medical Officer associated with the Early Detection Department.

The team was coordinated by W. Imo Singh, Lead, Early Detection, with support from Tekchand, DGM, Facilities, Niranjy Soibam and nursing personnel.

Iland Hospital provided orthopaedic and general medical services through Dr. N. Budha, Consultant in Orthopaedics, and Dr. L. Elizabeth, Medical Officer. The team was supported by HR Manager L. Sanaton, BDO L. Gullit and three nursing staff members.

Aadarsh Hospital & Research Institute participated through a team led by Resident Medical Officer Dr. Rajkumari Roji, along with Marketing Executive Aribam Jayalakshmi Devi and Nursing Officers Anjita Maisnam and Ningthoujam Sunanda Devi.

As part of its contribution, Aadarsh Hospital also offered a free Pap smear laboratory investigation facility, valid for one month, to encourage cervical cancer screening and preventive examinations among women.

Medilane Foundation provided specialised eye and dental screening services. Its dental team included Dr. Luxmee Kh, Dr. Samananda and Dr. Binanda, supported by dental nurses and assistants Binita and Premika.

The eyecare team comprised optometrists Warepam Bindiya and Nahakpam Poireingambi, opticians Laishram Lila and Khaidem Merina, and AR Handler Soibam Ramananda. The team was coordinated by Team Manager Yengkhom Wanglen.

University Outreach Beyond the Campus

The availability of specialists from different medical disciplines allowed participants to seek consultations and advice on multiple health concerns at a single venue.

Held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., the camp recorded approximately 300 participants and provided an opportunity to promote awareness about cancer screening, routine health examinations and personal well-being.

The initiative also demonstrated how universities, government agencies, hospitals and volunteers can work together to make basic healthcare services more accessible to the wider community.

Through the programme, Manipur University sought to strengthen its public outreach activities while encouraging a greater emphasis on preventive healthcare and early medical intervention.
