The Department of Zoology, Manipur University, Canchipur, organized the initiation programme of the Live Germplasm Resource Centre in Manipur in collaboration with ICARNational Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources, Lucknow, on Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. at the western site (near the Mahseer Hatchery) of the Manipur University campus.

The programme was coordinated by Dr. Rameshori Yumnam, Assistant Professor (S-3), Department of Zoology, Manipur University, who serves as the coordinator of the Live Germplasm Resource Centre initiative. Prof. Naorem Lokendra Singh, Vice-Chancellor of Manipur University, graced the programme.

The Live Germplasm Resource Centre aims to strengthen the conservation, development, and management of aquatic genetic resources of Manipur and the Northeast region, with special emphasis on endemic and indigenous fish species.

Speaking on the occasion, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Naorem Lokendra Singh remarked, “Manipur, being a lacustrine region, has a long tradition of aquaculture supported by rich indigenous knowledge and skills among its people. Situated within a biodiversity hotspot, the state is home to a wide variety of fish species. The establishment of the Live Germplasm Resource Centre, therefore, marks an important step toward conserving our aquatic biodiversity. This initiative will also contribute to the development of the fisheries sector, playing a crucial role in strengthening the economy and overall development of the state.”

The initiative seeks to promote biodiversity conservation, sustainable aquaculture practices, and advanced research, while also enhancing capacity building in aquatic resource management.
