The Department of Sociology, Manipur University, observed the International Day of Families on Thursday, May 15, 2026, at the department premises to highlight the importance of the family as a fundamental social institution amid rapid social changes, rising individualism, and evolving family structures.
The programme began with the University Anthem and traditional felicitation of dignitaries with Lengyans. It was presided over by Prof. M. Lilee, Head of the Department of Sociology. Prof. L. Memcha, Dean, School of Social Sciences, Manipur University, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest.
In her address, Prof. L. Memcha highlighted the enduring relevance of family, stating, “Home is where family is.” Prof. M. Lilee, in her presidential remarks, reflected on the sociological need to strengthen family relationships in the face of emerging social challenges.
A special invited lecture on the theme “The Crumbling Foundation of the Family Institution and Bleak Future of Children” was delivered by Prof. Haobijam Vokendro Singh, Head, Department of Anthropology, Manipur University.
Prof. Vokendro Singh examined the conceptual evolution of family and diverse family structures across the world. He emphasised that culture, rather than biology, primarily shapes human behaviour, citing varied child-rearing traditions globally. He highlighted the family’s critical role in nation-building as the cradle of citizenship and values.
Using global statistics, he linked income disparity, rising age at marriage, divorce rates, and changing family structures to child-rearing outcomes. He also discussed the socio-psychological impacts on children growing up in unstable family environments and called for collective societal efforts to preserve family values and responsibilities.
The International Day of Families event concluded with a vote of thanks, a group photograph, and light refreshments. Faculty members, research scholars, students from various departments, and invitees attended the programme.
