Imphal, September 15: The Manipur Institute of Technology (MIT), Manipur University, observed National Engineers’ Day 2026 on Monday with a call to harness innovation and digital technologies for a sustainable future.
The programme, organised by MIT in collaboration with the Institution’s Innovation Council, Manipur Institute of Technology (IIC-MIT), was held at the institute’s campus under the theme, “Smart Engineering for a Sustainable Future through Innovation and Digitalization.”
National Engineers’ Day is observed every year on September 15 to commemorate the birth anniversary of eminent engineer and statesman Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya.
Prof. Basanta Singh, Dean of the School of Engineering, Manipur University, attended the programme as the chief guest, while Prof. Th. Suresh Singh, Principal of MIT, presided over the function.
Addressing the gathering, Prof. Basanta Singh highlighted the important role played by engineers in technological innovation, sustainable development and nation-building. He urged students to combine technical competence with creativity, problem-solving skills and an innovative mindset.
He also stressed the growing importance of interdisciplinary collaboration as engineering increasingly intersects with environmental science, digital technology and other fields.
Prof. Th. Suresh Singh said technical institutions have a responsibility to prepare students for emerging technological challenges through research, innovation and exposure to new technologies.
He encouraged students to explore innovation and entrepreneurship and contribute to the technological development of both the region and the country.
Faculty members, students and other members of the institute participated in the programme, which also reflected on the engineering legacy of Sir M. Visvesvaraya and the relevance of digitalisation, smart technologies and sustainable engineering solutions in addressing contemporary societal challenges.
The programme concluded with MIT renewing its commitment to promoting research, innovation, digital transformation and sustainable engineering education.
